Don’t get caught

I have been told woodpeckers are protected so you'd better not get caught harming one.

Also if your friend wants one, it’s best if it doesn’t look to similar to a real firearm.

As a general statement projectiles are no goes in city limits. That said what you are trying to do is far from uncommon.

Illegal within city limits unless in a designated facility.

It's just a really bad idea in general if you live in the city - a neighbor may not realize it's an airsoft gun and call the police, at which point they will respond assuming it's a firearm.

I'll go ahead and assume Buster's friend isn't stupid enough to do this in such a place that his neighbors can easily see him.

A friend of mine allegedly used a pellet gun to get rid of his woodpecker. I'd love to do that to my resident woodpecker(s), but don't have the balls to, as I only have a 5ft fence around my yard; lots of neighbors around to see.

Like ExtraSlow said, the law is you do nothing to them. You simply watch as they destroy your house.

It's also illegal to shoot them from inside your house, regardless of whether or not you are scaring your neighbors. People doing stuff like this is why rules get tighter and tighter all the time for hobbyists.

If it illegal anyway might as well use a 22, subsonics would help.

Does your friend have a good lawyer?

Buster

I advised friend to quit with the rambo shit and just hang up a picture of the new M4. That would scare even a woodpecker away.

If I had a clear line of sight through an open-able window, from well within the house, it's highly likely I would remedy it the redneck way. Unfortunately for me, this isn't the case.

Were not in Brooks - assume pretty much anything fun/projectile is illegal here.

Do it at night or in a way no one knows anything. I have a handgun BB/co2 gun i used in my condo to deal with pigeons. I always stayed concealed. Get the wrong person freaked out with a toy gun, and its suddenly CPS TAC knocking.

My neighbour shoots squirrels from his back deck in full view, with his airsoft, when they attack his bird feeder. No fucks given and his background for the shot is his own back yard.

Don’t get caught... or just dont.

They’re protected under the Migratory Bird Convention Act which has some big time fines if ever caught

He said he couldn't do shit about it cuz they're protected so all he's been doing is throwing tennis balls at it to try and get it to leave or go somewhere else but it comes back after a while unfortunately. He's had to fill in the holes with spray foam hahaha.

I've seen one around my block recently too, caught it on the ring cam on the side of the house, also saw it pecking at my neighbors place.

Fucking thing is a nightmare.

100% a bird box. I ended up doing the same thing with a flicker at my last house, I could not stop it from going after my siding till I finally built it a nest box

It is actually legal to shoot and kill magpies, but it's very sticky. You shall not shoot where a miss will not land and your property, so that adds significant complexity. They rarely die when struck with these fucking nerf'd pellet guns, so you have to go murder it with a shovel and your neighbours seeing that is undesirable.
*Assuming Edmonton had same laws as Calgary, which is likely. I think it's probably provincial.
My friend has killed dozens and claims to have found it incredibly satisfying. Magpies are complete vermin.

I'm guessing you can't kill woodpeckers, though... I can't recall where I found the proof that you can shoot magpies, but I believe it was key that they are non-migratory.

I think a "wandering head owl" might help.

whats that black box?

He put up a small bird house to try and attract other birds so the woodpecker wouldn't peck his house. Smaller hole, I can't get it though. I dunno why he did that....but I don't think it worked. Or maybe he built it for the woodpecker but again, I don't think it helped.

It is definitely 100% not legal to shoot pests with anything in Calgary.

I don't get why they'd peck at a house. I've got a beautiful Flicker that stops by every once in awhile and I'm pretty sure he's just scooping bugs off j-channels and vinyl siding lips. I don't see any harm.

Magpies... all need to die, always.

I'm not sure why they go after stucco, but we used to live in an older place with wooden siding and the woodpeckers had a field day - it was awful. They would peck the wood looking for bugs. Right on the other side of our bedroom wall too.

ExtraSlow
11-12-2020, 11:35 AM
Woodpeckers love stucco and hammer away at it like it's got cocaine underneath. I don't know why, but it's a common problem. My bro's house in Rosedale has 4 holes each larger than a softball from those fuckers.

11-12-2020, 11:40 AM
They go after my out too... it’s not even stucco... vinyl siding. At times it sounds like they’re hitting the flashing too.

Ive got 2 woodpeckers visiting my property off and on. One is a downy woodpecker that drilled a couple inch diameter hole in the exterior wall. Had it repaired (eifs) and little bastard still comes by randomly. Also saw a flicker 2 days ago in the tree out front. Much bigger than the downy but luckily this one didnt peck the house and just stuck to the trees. If you are going to shoot it, try and find an angle where your neighbours cant see and you have a safe backdrop. For example, sneak up below it and shoot into your soffit so if you miss the soffit will catch the round. Use a .177 air rifle. Its illegal so dont do it/get caught.

I think there are 2 reasons they peck houses. Usually they are looking for bugs below the surface to eat or making a nest hole. Either way, they like the eifs cause it makes a good noise to start then they get to the soft foam inside. Eifs is a shit product too, wish I had gone with hardy board.

Some of the Nerf guns out there have got some reasonable velocity. It's not going to actually harm anything but perhaps annoy the bastards enough that they leave your friend's place alone.
