View Full Version : Most fun cars *under* 150 km/h

Since this is still a car forum, I thought I’d open up a discussion on what cars you can have the most fun below 150k/h. Without a track and not wanting to get impounded, it makes me wonder if you can have more usable fun without buying a car capable to 180mph. Bonus, what cars *could* be in this category with minor changes (ex cayman with shorter gears).

All sorts of stuff. S2000, Caterham, Fiesta ST, pre 2012 spicy Hondas, Mini, various Lotus are what come to my mind first when I think about fun for minimal cost and risk. Cars that are light and have minimal assists feel like more of an “experience” when you get into them. Anything with nice steering feel, nice shift feel and bonus points for open top. Good seats make a car feel more special in my opinion. Cars that can be adjusted noticeably with driver inputs IE quick direction change, trail braking, lift off oversteer are fun. Cars that have lots of pitch and roll combined with reasonable grip make it fun to use weight transfer while driving. Cars that can be steered easily with throttle inputs.

Honda Fit vs VW Golf TDi showdown both on 8-10 year old Hoosiers on a wet auto x course was one of the most memorable days I’ve ever had.

I know, too much grip! Although better for lap times.

I used to drive a 96 Golf with the 1.8 8v engine, 5spd. It was so slow you could drive it pinned everywhere you went.

Best smiles per miles car I've owned.

Optionally tuned with bolt ons. 86-8800rpm

Sounds super fast, but isn’t haha.

The car I most consistently exceeded the speed limit in was my. 1993 Hyundai Excel. Foot to the floor 100% of the time. No joke.

Older hondas for sure, any Si or SiR model from late 90s to early 2000s. Miata (shitty tires are important, my dad has PSS on his and it handles like it's velcro'd to the road). Older DC2 integra.

Yeah, that intake induction note  loved my 09 Si FG2 w/k&n intake , hondata & nittos. always revved to fuel cut .

Would also add L98 C4 Corvette or F Bod. Lots of stoplight to stoplight power. Yeah they run out of breath by ~4500 rpm but for blasting around town, a great choice.

Honda Fit is a lot of fun.... but it doesn't really go 150km/h haha. Its a ton of fun below 80 km/h though.

Can't confirm shitty tire mod.

It goes "UNDER" 150 km/h. So it fits.

The fit doesn't really come alive until you hit 140km/h in 5th gear.
Vtec yo!

I've been wanting to buy a new car for a while... But I get back in the fit, start banging gears and just can't bring myself to do it. They're good little cars.

I really enjoyed blasting down the coquihalla and mountain roads in BC with a 2000 Infiniti G20T. Might have not been the fastest car back in the day but it handled like a dream and I had that car over 180km/hr many times in my youth lol

Wow that would be a good bargain buy. When I had the car I was 19 years old and blew all my money and could not afford any mods other than a few cosmetic things like an Impul grill and wheels. I do recall everyone on the forums back in the day talking about how easy it was to mod the SR20 engine or to do engine swaps with other turbo nissan engines.

Either way the little 2.0 engine was good enough for me to go around racing against civics, imprezas and mustangs at the time:rofl:

Without a doubt. My current Cayenne has the 18 way seats and it is miles better than the 14 ways in my previous.

You mean a Cayman GT4 (manual) with shorter gears? Any other Cayman (as well as the new GT4 PDK) has basically perfectly gearing for the street and is a ton of fun under 150km/h.

I was going to say Lotus Elise R ...

But after some more thought... I thinking I am going to stick with my Suzuki Side Kick 2 door Topless manual. I had tons of fun with it when I was teenage, taking corners with three wheels off the ground, going off road, jump, fly .......everything! ^_^

I love my Fiesta ST and around the city its probably one of the most fun cars I've had over the years. With some bolt on and a nice tune it has a nice rush of torque and a blast in the corners. Lots of fun to be had under 80km/hr all day.

Aside from exotics or other cars that aren't very usable in the city or ride way too harsh, IMO if the car is good on the track or above 150Km/h, it's also going to be a lot of fun in the city and up to 150Km/h. Basically any German sports sedan, hot hatch, etc. fits the bill perfectly.

I still think for most people a Golf R / CTR / Veloster N are the most fun you can have day-to-day without sacrificing too much comfort or practicality and without spending huge dollars.

Hands down most fun I've had in a car was ice racing and around town cruising in an original mini cooper. And yes I fold into it nicely.
