My girlfriend has a number of DVDs from other regions (but they are all NTSC) and she would like an external DVD drive so that she can watch these DVDs on her new desktop (Windows 10) computer (it did not come with any optical drive).

I've read that some external DVD drives only allow you to change regions 5 times before they lock to a specific region. That obviously will not work.

Is there an external DVD drive that will play all regions and not lock up? Some drives listed on Amazon have users that report playing movies in VLC works for multi-regions, but I don't understand if it's the drive that locks the region, or the software that the people were using?

Thanks for any input you can provide.

P.S. bonus if the drive plays Blu-ray, but that's not a requirement.

I mean, region free DVD players are like 40 bucks...

But if she is insistent on watching on a desktop, just rip it before watching. With the speed of drives and PCs these days it takes what 2 mins to rip, decrypt and region free a dvd? I think that’s what VLC does in real time.

That may be what we end up doing. Thanks for the info, rage!
