This review is for all the white members who enjoy chinese food and have yet to discover this place.
For a Calgary court like experience in your area visit Pebble street in the NE and the restaurant along center street (?Sun ji guy?Sorry dont remember what its called)

I always enjoy their set dinners, hot plates and various noodle dishes. Their late hours of operation, cheap prices and fast service are a plus as well.

Location: 2nd ave and center street (in china town)

Food - 4
Ambience - 3
Service - 4 - even though I don't speak chinese and I have to point to my selection on the menu the service fast and thats all that matter when youre hungry
Value - 5

Dammit man don't tell me that, that basement is scary enough as it is:rofl: I always wondered why in a restaurant full of people I seemed to be the only one who used the washrooms.

I think it's just an urban legend but it does give you the chills down there when you're by yourself. No one's been able to tell me why it's haunted.

Yeah Ive heard people talk down there too but I assumed they were people who worked there. Isn't there a stairway from the kitchen that goes down a storage room in the basement?

You do know they got shut down by the health department a while ago?

That is when they started using all the disposable stuff.

Rumour was that they found human feces in the food.

The price... well it has gone up considerably.

I have been going there for years and will continue, just not as often. It used to be great value. Do you guys remember when it was lined up out the door? Haven't seen it like that in years.

Oh god, I heard about that story and made me wanna puke.
I think that place is garbage.

The place on center street is way better, cept the washroom seems like someone pissed all over the place.

"Oops better not touch that, it feels wet"

HAHAHAHA! Fuck, this thread's hilarious!

But as for all those rumors, I heard that they were just made up by disgruntled employees to drive away business because they don't get to keep the tips. With all the gossip us Chinese people do, you'd think we'd know the real story!

a my friend's dad see's ghosts all the time, i.e. their house back in the philippenes, and their house in NW Calgary, some spirits are good some are bad, but a while ago he went to calgary court with my buddy and he in fact did feel that there was some sort of spirit down there.

worst thing was that i had to take a piss right after he told me that, i just ran outside to the alley and pisses

urban legend or not, it's just so sketchy down there.

plus, it's so much cleaner in the alley lol

Yeah I'm not too superstitious. But even before I heard about the place being haunted everytime I'd go down there, I would feel very uneasy. I'd always get the feeling that someone is watching. What's worst is on the way back up, the big mirror they have on the wall, it always feels like someone's reflection or something is there. Creepy. And when I heard that place is haunted, it sent chills down my spine because I've felt weird down there before.

Sorry man don't mean to offend, like Silver_SpecV said I'm white. It wasn't I started dating an asian girl that I realised the difference between western style chinese food and the authentic stuff. Most white people have no idea what authentic chinese food is, I'm still not sure if I myself know what authentic chinese really is because everytime we go out to an authentic chinese food restaurant I order a western style dish:dunno:

I've heard stories like that about Earl's, the white spot and Denny's so who knows if any of them are true. Just play it safe and only eat homemade soup

I dont think I've ever been to a chinese restaurant that didnt have 'up to standard' washroom facilities. And I'm Chinese!

I've been to alot of Chinese restaurants, and dont get me wrong, the food is great. but when it comes down to washrooms, its rather nasty.

Ever go to Treasures of China in Chinatown? the mens washroom has like 6 or 7 urinals against the wall adjacent to the stalls.. but guess what, you have to squeeze through a 3-4 foot hallway in order to get to the ones at the end of the line.. and the floor, being a dark tile and all, you see pools of pee stain under each urinal... and the pools are huge! if you walk through to the last urinal, you cant help but step in the stains.

Same with the restaurant under the Cultural Centre.. I saw a mouse in there twice. TWICE. That washroom facility has urinals near the door to the washrooms. I opened the door once, and WHAM, there was an old man standing a good foot and a half away from the urinal, arching his pee into the bowl. Damn, if I didnt stop that instant, I woulda walked through his pee stream. :whipped:

And whats up with the restaurants that use the recyclable towel (for drying your hands - instead of paper towels) Im all for environmentally friendly and all.. but have you seen boogers and snot on those things? some practical jokers.. jeeze. Im not the only one with a phobia about cleanliness in bathrooms.. I usually tear a bit of paper towel just so I could pull on the door handle to get out.. and then I'd let the paper towel fall to the floor.. where many others have done the same.. judging by the pile of paper towel bits at the door. :D

Just bumping to save the bandwidth from making new thread.

I'd say this place is still a crowd pleaser (reno'ed after the 2013 flood)

I'm creeped out by the basement/bathroom as well, since I was a kid from the story(s) told (when it was a dim sum restaurant wayyyyyy back)... If it's semi urgent for a number #2, I'd prefer just holding it till I get to Elbow casino if traveling South bound afterwards, if heading North bound since I'm a loyal TD bank customer, I'd stop into the TD up the hill on Centre 12 Ave across from Mazda dealer, do some bullshit money transcation and then smoothly ask the teller if I can use their staff bathroom. It's better now with Tea Funny bubble tea across the street, so that's another option if traveling north after Calgary Court CC.

Unfortuntely, I've braved it thru both #1 and #2 in desperate times. Sometimes you might luck out and someone is in the same shoes and have to head down, so you just play it cool and follow.

Good value, as OP Redlyne stated, they still have lunch and dinner and tea time specials. http://www.tasteofasiagroup.ca/ is probably like the Denny's for white people; if you're Asian in Calgary, there's a high probability you've been to one of their run of the mill venues. It may not be Hong Kong, but you sure as hell will still be able to fan/hand wave your server for service (servers don't come to you, you go to them/flag them down; very Hong Kong friendly)

Since within the Asian community, there's rumours that the tips don't go to the servers in this chain group, they could care less if you tip or not. They really don't. And that's evident at their fast conveyor belt like actions: from giving you menu, take order, slide food plate on your table, give you bill, wipe your table to next customer inheriting your seat; all they do is walk up and down in one smooth circular motion with multi tables.

3 dishes (one of them was a set course with milk tea/coffee, soup), topped with buttery peanut butter deep fried toast. $40-45 ish

Aghhrrrr. 3 days in a row, not really sick of it. Still don’t like the basement bathroom. Sometimes I’ll just use Ho Won or Great Taste restaurant to the right and left neighbours to CC, just as dirty, but not as scary.

The bathrooms at calgary court are way better than great taste, or have you had a bad experience in there. Although for our family great taste seems to be the go to out of the two for some reason.

Great photos

It’s always super cold in the bathroom at Calgary court, Ive always figured it was from the ghosts that haunt that basement.

Maybe it's just the washroom but I've been in the basement tons of times by myself doing food deliveries and no signs of ghosts. They have a shute in the back you throw everything down to the basement and I'd jump down the shute when done to sort and move everything. This was many years ago and come to think about it, it was kind of sketchy but it didn't bother me at the time. Their food tastes good cause they go through about 50lb's of msg a day.
