View Full Version : Jackin' it - What's your favourite kind of jack for all seasons? non-MEGA-thread

My nearly 20 year old floor jack is rusting out, and it's heavy as hell anyway, so I'm on the prowl for a new jack. I don't do nearly as much mechanical work as I used to, and I am not planning to get back into it as a hobby, so maybe a dedicated floor jack is overkill? Bottle jacks are smaller and cheaper, and should work in most situations? Bonus is they are something you can carry around with you for camping trips in case of a blowout or something, probably more flexible than a floor jack for that purpose. Second bonus is that they are easier to store in my garage which is already stuffed with bullshit. Maybe I need more than one jack for my truck, trailer, van etc? Those aluminum floor jacks should be lighter, but are seriously expensive. Seems like overkill for a guy who uses a jack maybe once a year.

Anyway, not really a specific question, just want to talk about jacks. And wanted an excuse to start a thread and use this GIF.

I have a low profile floor jack ( actually I should really check if it’s low enough profile for the new car ).

Does the job, but the other 364 days a year it’s big and heavy and doesn’t have a logical place to store it (currently wedged under my husky toolbox where it doesn’t really fit lol).

Does Milwaukee make an M18 fuel version yet? Seems like they can do pretty much anything with their M18 system these days.

What’s really tempting to me is one of those quick jacks. Lift whole car. Do whole job. Done.

Some of them are even portable enough to keep in storage in the trailer etc.

Dunno if they meet the standards of the 4 post versus 2 post master race

Someon suggested an air-powered bottle jack, and I looked it up, and I was aroused.

Bottle jacks are sketchy AF when trying to do anything with a car because they have a small base (which can be fixed) and a poor means of pushing against the frame. They can slip easily.

If you are lifting vehicles.. use a floor jack. The quickjacks are nice but they sit pretty low for a lot of vehicles and one of the disadvantages is they don't lift straight up and lift at a bit of an angle which you have to take into consideration.

I myself am in the market for a new floor jack as my 3 ton jack is sketchy af when releasing and makes me very nervous.

For use for your truck, camping. Every day carry JIC type jack.

Hi lift jack is the way to go, don’t cheap out and buy an optional base for it. Also buy the winch kit. Now you also have a winch in a pinch.

If you need a new floor jack, Costco brings them in a couple times a year. Nice option.

Stick with a floor jack. You may not need it often now but think about in a few years when your kids drive and you may have to change sets more often.

+1 for the Costco floor jack model - heard great things and that’s what I’m planning to buy after my Canadian tire special floor jack kicks the bucket. It’s about 10 years old now and starting to get long in the teeth so probably another year or two for me.

I picked up a low profile 3 ton (2.5 maybe?) from costco recently. Its great and was not expensive. If you can wait, they go on sale now and then. Bonus is can be returned if something goes wrong.

-1 for bottle jack for anything other than keeping in the trailer for emergencies.

I have a big low profile that works for pretty much everything, but then I have a smaller floor jack that isn't low profile, but for a regular height car, it's small and light.

Costco jack gives me mad regrets. I ended up buying a motomaster which was quite expansive but I needed it in a pinch. Couple weeks Costco had what appeared to be the exact same jack for half the price.

Costco jack FTW.

Can solve this problem with a back yard shed. I store absolutely zero, toys + garden + non-car related items in my garage. 2 sheds for that.

As far as the jacks, if you had just cars you could get by with a Superstore 40$ jack (1 ton, still have mine from 10 years ago, works fine) - but with a truck, that immediately dictates something heavier.

I have been using the same cheap ass CT Big Red floor jack for as long as I can remember. It's missing parts and the handle is bent and the rear swivel wheels are rusted to the point they no longer spin so they are ground flat on one end and wouldn't spin even if I freed them up.
Finally fell off my wallet and bought the Torin 3-ton jack from Costco. Couldn't pass it up at the price (I think that is what I paid-just cribbed the pic from RFD).

No brand I recommend. Amazon sells them as well as Canadian Tire and Princess Auto. Probably other places. They aren't complex. If your floor is a little rough, you may want to get ones with large diameter wheels to help roll over the imperfractions. And of course, you want to be sure your garage floor is level, or you'll roll away.

The problem with most jacks is their lift height sucks ass and you always end up needing blocks or ramps.

I got tired of all that shit and splurged and bought the 2nd one linked by Berserker and never looked back. The 24" lift height does wonders for small cars to get it up on jackstands easily.

The other thing that you will find with the small jacks is that when they have weight on them they aren't that graceful to bring down or adjust if you need.

Speaking of leaking!
I have a very old jack that was awesome, but it's now leaking. Is there a reasonable way to get these repaired? Or do I have to find a preschool dumpster to throw it's 70-pound ass into?

2 video options. You choose.

Oh really? I need to change tires for the Audi and now a CR-V. Is it still overkill?

Alternative is this...

But open to suggestions

I don't need one till October winter change so maybe I can wait for that Eliminator one.

Wait for the eliminator if you can. I went from a cheapie 2 ton like the second one to the eliminator and it’s night and day. Could just barely lift my q5 enough get the summers off with the small one, whereas the eliminator makes things so much easier. Not to mention it just feels way more solid so I’m not concerned about it failing while changing the tires (I don’t use Jack stands for seasonal wheel swaps)

I will say it’s a heavy motherfucker tho. I had no idea how big and heavy duty it was from the pics so I was surprised when I went to get it. But mine stays in my garage and it’s fairly easy to roll around with the wheels so it’s a non issue for me

Lightweight jacks are only desirable if you need to take them places outside of the shop. For the same price and only use in the shop, this one is a better deal to me.

If you need reach or extra lift height, wait for this one to go on sale again.

Didn't have to wait long. That 2nd one just went on sale today, $100 off. Might pick it up since we've got 2 SUVs now and my current low-pro jack could barely get our old minivan off the ground.

Good choice. Its a heavy jack so be careful of that.

Costco has these quick lifts, which look like scissor lifts but they're $1400 yikes

RFD says these were on blowout this summer at the warehouse for $1000. I’m frugal so even on sale I gotta wait for the all time best price.

For sure the cheapest way to enable engine/trans drops, but I’ve read they do require some mods to maximize practicality (casters and jack point inserts).

This is true, I almost picked one up but decided against it due to the fact that I rarely do any work myself anymore

I'd like a set, because you can't really do wheels/suspension on a 4post lift that well. Not in the budget ATM.

Get the floating or sliding lift for it.

Yup, these hardly take up any space at all.

Wow, that's not what I pictured, at all. What do each of those weigh?
