Mine was denied, because it doesn't apply to motorcycle insurance, which makes sense, but I figured I'd still try.

Okay kids, so after some investigation I'm prepared to make a statement on this. I'm going to quote something I sent to another Beyonder this morning:

"Truthfully I don’t know what the angle is but I can promise you that from working with Intact (and really all insurance companies) for more than two decades now, they don’t do ANYTHING without an angle that works in their favour somewhere at some point. I have my suspicions as to what’s going on but nothing I’m willing to put in writing. For the time being, Intact has had their hand slapped by regulators for this stunt but I guess take the money? Because they initiated contact I can’t see how coverage would be an issue now or down the road but I suspect this will come back around at some point."

Remember, by saying yes to this you are stating in writing that your day to day driving behaviour is fundamentally different than what your policy is rated for. If you're already rated for pleasure only (working from home) as a lot of policies are, have your driving habits truly changed in the recent past or are you already receiving a discounted rate for that reality? If you're working from home but being rated for commuting are you okay with being bought off for a one time credit or perhaps you should review your policy with your broker and take the lower rate on an ongoing basis, not just once?

I have to be careful with how much I say about this as there are other factors at play on my end that should be kept to myself. I will say however that when the world un-fucks itself and we can go back to the consumption of libations in a public setting with whomever we choose, I may very well be persuaded to speak openly and uncensored about my true thoughts on the matter for a simple bribe of a beverage or plate of wings.

I dropped Intact for RBC/Aviva because my premium went 100% on renewal; Aviva halved it back to usual.

Interesting they'd do that. I remember receiving a letter from them about my home insurance policy changing due to COVID. When you received the letter/email to get COVID relief, did you have to acknowledge or click saying 'I agree'? That's the equivalent of a signature

My insurance right now is basically paying to protect from driveway theft.
I'm already on the low end of kms used and I don't think they'd go for an avg of 50km a month usage.

I basically drive about the same distance as you in my Rover and my wife's vehicle usage has been cut to about a third of what it used to be. She's getting a bit of a break, but I'm already as low as I can go and still have the ability to drive it. My Jaguar has been parked for nearly 2 years. FML. Guess I could have stuck with Aviva after all.

I'm not sure how some can afford to drive. It's a privilege not a right and if you're the cause of many accidents, why are your premiums not unaffordable?
I remember when I was a kid, hearing some people not being able to afford to drive because of their bad driving.
Now, that never happens.

$102 back for me.

One of my friends back in the day got so many demerit points that his insurance was $500/mth. This was back in the 90s. He couldn't afford to drive after that lol.

Intact is the largest P&C insurance provider in Alberta, I think somewhere around 20% - 25% market share last I heard? They've got their flaws and nobody's perfect but on the whole over the last 20 years they've been pretty good to partner with. Kind of like a long term spouse, there are days you don't LIKE them very much but there are more good days than bad.

Btw, getting a large refund isn't exactly the best thing. Sorry to burst your guy's bubble. It's like tax. The bigger refund you get just means you got too much taken away prior to deductions.

I only got $90 some bucks back because I already got money back in 2020 by requesting my vehicles but put on parking mode early on. At least I THINK that is what happened... Right Bill?... lol

"Are you driving less, or habe your driving habits changed during the pandemic?"

"Y/N"

Changing your coverage doesn't matter. There's probably not a person in Alberta who couldn't honestly answer that question as Yes. Even driving to work every day since the start, the first 6 months my driving was changed because I drove safer with no one else on the road.
