View Full Version : Large Family Car - Poor People Edition

Remember when every family had a grand marquis or a cutlass or something? Ahh those were the days.

Anywhoooo, in 2022, what truly "large family cars" still exist. Whatever "format" you want, just needs to seat at least 5 plus enough luggage for a decent road trip, and cost under $50,000 so it's affordable for poor people.
Like Kia K5, or Sorrento, Honda Accord, Ford Explorer, that kind of thing.
I mean I'd love a long and low wagon to make this list, but don't think that's happening.

What's the biggest "family" car these days? What's the best? I'm sure this thread will just be arguments, but I find it entertaining.

I ended up with a rental Chevy Impala a couple years ago and it was surprisingly amazing. Sipped fuel, whisper quiet, roomy, reasonably powerful, decent stereo, intuitive controls and a trunk big enough for a dead hooker.
I was not expecting much, but it was honestly the best rental car I've had in several years. And, it's a long way from a hideous car considering the turds that have been coming out recently.

I have no idea what they cost, but it's got to be less than $50k

Allroad ends up being around 70k optioned out. It's not roomy enough for 5 adults, 4 is fine though.

The Dodge Charger has to be the reigning champ of the "cheap and large" segment. Under $40K for a basic-bitch V6/8spd SXT model.

I had no idea they still made that, thought it was phased out years ago, but good call. Dodge Durango is also a "big SUV" that is big on the inside, which somehow many others don't manage. Under $50k for base model too.

This! My brother actually has one (2015) that he bought for an "in between" vehicle when he sold his 335xi until he decided on what he wanted next... Almost 4 years later he still hasn't moved on haha and it looks sharp with the factory 19" wheels. It sucks that they stopped making them but it does make sense with the market moving towards crossovers etc. Cabin space is really good and as mentioned the trunk is massive. Even with the 4 banger engine in such a big car it's still got some pep to it.

I feel like selling the wife’s navigator and getting her a sweet 2000 Grand caravan. Just got back from sking and it’s so crowded in the navigator, it’s better than the truck though. We have the epic vw alltrack it’s fine but with three kids I’m there is to many car seats. Solution sell the navigator get the wife a mini van, sell the alltrack get a truck. Keep rs4 forever. Haha.

Low tier Atlas. This is a sneaky good choice. Looks much more "high end" than other things in this list, and does have good interior room. You can even get a comfort line trim and be out the door for $50k including tax.

It might not be a "car" ExtraSlow, but since SUV, minivans, trucks are tossed in the topic now. Consider a Chevrolet Express Van 1500. I've seen real men haul all their Costco needs, weekend fence maintenance items from Windsor plywood, while seating their 3 wives, 6 children comfortably and safetly. I see on IG there's movements converting them into 4x4 awd as well

genuinely poor people (like me) can't buy new cars so used from a shady dealership is the only way to go

I've always sort of liked the idea of a Ford Taurus SHO with the Ecoboost, but that's no longer available new...I thought those came in at right around 50k give or take

I see the Mustang Mach-E starts at 50.5, worth considering?

In laws put a deposit on a new Atlas Crosssport (5 seater) Highline (2nd from top trim) that's expected in a month or two. Pretty much every single option out there except 360 camera which the top trim has. Digital cockpit and everything is included in this option and it came to 57K all-in after negotiations (which weren't easy to do). Anyway, great option for that price point.

Ford Flex was probably the last truly large wagon. Neat vehicle, and really versatile.
Minivan is the obvious answer, and usually the correct one, but these threads aren't about being right, they are about having a discussion, finding unusual choices, that kind of thing.
My wife's been driving an Odyssey since 2012 and it's been perfect. Great car and better than an SUV in 95% of situations.

No third row in the Maybach with 4 seats, so the trunk is still large.

Caravan drops by $20k when you drive it off the lot; GLS Maybachs are selling for ~$75k over MSRP on the used market. It comes down to simple economics and the choice is clear.

Second row is moved back, cargo cover can’t be removed, refrigerator fills up a bunch of it. Internet says 18.4 cubic feet… that’s not too big, not to mention the fridge sits right in the middle lol. For reference, rav4 has >37 cubic feet behind the seats.

I’m not arguing though, maybach GLS is still the perfect family hauler.

Sienna starts at 41k which is a lot of “car” for the money. Although I can not recommend it anymore. There’s no way to disable traction control and I can not drift at all in the car. Closest is some extreme trail braking to get the rear end out but as soon as you apply power it straightens right out even if TC off. Unacceptable.
