It’s hilarious that people are bitching about their bills being doubled when their usage doubled. Fixed rate doesn’t mean fixed usage. But it’s the UCPs fault.

It’s not like the UCP is doing a stellar job, but the more stupid pass the buck rhetoric gets thrown around, the less meaningful it becomes. I guess they don’t understand that either haha.

Usage didn't double over last year, it's very similar.
We used 3400kwh this month and same last year (within 5%) (rigs and equipment kept indoors, heated)

This is BY far the highest bill we have seen.

Even gas was up from $1 per gj a few years ago to $5/GJ. Something they flare to get rid of.

My bill is usually high for this time of the year but this year is even higher. My actual usage is on par for the month so it's definitely the energy price and stupid carbon tax. It's about 100 bucks difference. It's like gas for my car. I fill up when the tank is empty. I pay when the bill comes. There isn't much that I can do about it at this point. I guess I can protest in front of the city hall?

Yup. Cold days with little sunshine. Most energy usage :surprised_pikachu_face:

Dec was also a record cold month. Calgary hasn’t hit below -32C in a decade while we had multiple days well below that this year.

But think of all the platypuses we saved by paying that tax.

We still remit 100% of carbon taxes back to taxpayers in ‘Berta right?

My gas bill was 550.00, electricity 300 for December.

Sadly we don't actually get it back. Carbon taxes are simply a federal income tax rebate, a flat amount for every Canadian.

Yet in AB we'll pay more in carbon tax because of natural gas heating and coal / gas powered electricity than say QC which uses a lot more electric to heat via hydro power.

So AB likely pays more but all Canadians get a equal rebate. Such a shitty system.

No doubt. I was irate when I saw my bill was almost double this month. Everyone online is foaming at the mouth about distribution fees and whatnot. I went and actually examined my last 2 bills. Yup, still getting fucked by distribution, but no worse than any other time in the last 10 years. My electricity usage is up by 50%, which I assume is because of the huge space heater the wife was running in the bedroom during the cold spell. And gas usage was at least double, which obviously the furnace runs harder when it's cold out. Good, I can forget about this and hope it stays warmer going forward.

Mine was $556. Last year around this time, highest bill was around $450. Judging by cost of kwh increase and nat gas, I actually expected it to be a little higher. Just over $40 in carbon taxes alone.

Lots of people online complaining about this one. Was freezing cold so it is what it is. Seems a lot of folks just do the market rate instead of contract. I guess the contract scares people away.

I was on contract with DE for 5 years when we moved in after building this place. They were ok. They sent me a renewal a couple years ago but I declined to go for another 5 years and decided to just do 1 year at market rates. That was ok until the rates started climbing recently.

So a couple weeks ago, I decided to go into a 1 year contract with power @ 8.39 cents per kWh and gas at $4.19/GJ. Won't save much on gas but the power is quite a bit cheaper.

Rejected. They sent me a letter saying I'm already a customer and not eligible for the 1 year fixed contract. My options are to remain in my current 1 year contract with market power/gas rates or sign a new 5 year contract with power/gas @ those same rates above. But on the 5 year I can get $250 cashback rewards (haven't looked into how that works) and a free Google Nest Hub (which I won't use lol)

EDIT: I see the UCA has a prompt on their homepage about higher utility bills this winter. Must have been a few people calling them about it.

Late to the party... But still interesting.

GAS
December 2020 used 11.8GJ that cost $117 which gives an "actual $/GJ" of $9.92 compared to the posted rate of $2.74/GJ... Average outside temp was -2.3°C

December 2021 used 16.9GJ that cost $214 which gives an "actual $/GJ" of $12.69 compared to the posted rate of $4.54/GJ... Average outside temp was -11.5°C
This means a rare increase of 66% only translated to an increase of 28% in $/GJ

ELECTRICITY
December 2020 used 998kWhr that cost $193 which gives an "actual $/kWhr" of $0.193 compared to the posted rate of $0.0672/kWhr

December 2021 used 1484kWhr that cost $381 which gives an "actual $/kWhr" of $0.257 compared to the posted rate of $0.13549/kWhr...
This means a rate increase of 100% only actually cost an extra 33% in $/kWhr

Notes:
1. Cost of electricity supposedly doubled and my usage went up by 50% yet bill didn't even double.
2. December 2021 was 100% working from home and 12/2020 was zero% WfH.
3. As I've always said, the real costs of utilities are all the transmission fees, riders, taxes, etc etc etc.
