Anyone know anywhere local I can get these? Looking for ~4500k color temp, 2 digits, 12" tall.
These are about 1 month for lead time on Esty. Hoping for something quicker.

etsy ones are probably a month leadtime because they just order them from aliexpress

I hadn't thought of that. Another benefit of big numbers.

Except the AliBaba ones are $27 each, vs the housenumbers website at ... $140 per number??? Holy shitballs.

Plus the power supply.

It would be a cold day in hell before you find me spending $500+ for house numbers, but maybe not for some of the Beyond ballers...

Wiring those in cleanly seems like a pain in the ass, a self-contained solar charging version would be appealing.

i did my own, much smaller though (i think 6 inch) acrylic from aliexpress, plenty visible, i mounted it centered above the garage door so i just drilled a hole through to the garage door opener power and used a generic 12v adapter... then i wired it in to a smart plug and use alexa to turn it on and off at sunset/sunrise.

We have ours in the same location on our house but they have a built in sunset/sunrise sensor.

Well this thread turned me onto an impulse buy lol. Wasn’t really in the market but looks cool and should be easy enough to install

Not in a huge rush so i ordered from AliExpress. $62 CAD for two 6” numbers and includes the power supply/driver. Hoping I can somehow tap into my sconces on the side of the garage door so that the number lighting will activate at the same time

So these arrived last Friday the 22nd. 17 days shipping for AliExpress is pretty darn good.

Quality is ok. If you look closely there are a few blemishes, but since these will be viewed from far away it should be fine. Install looks easy enough - just tap into your 110 on one side of the transformer and then wire in the numbers on the other side.

Nice. Let me know how the wiring goes. I ended up ordering the front-illuminated ones because it'll be on a black background. Still haven't arrived - stuck in customs right now it seems.

Has anyone installed theirs yet? I finished mine today, and they look great, but holy fack they're bright. I need to tone them down (especially since they're front-lit as the above pic). I'm not sure a dimmer switch will work, but that will probably be my first stab. Anyone had a similar issue?

sabad66

I finally got around to installing mine yesterday. Mine are backlit so don’t have that brightness problem

Install was pretty smooth. I drilled a hole through my sconce’s box all the way through insulation and poked through the garage drywall. Then I fished some wire through (the utility marking flags work really well for fishing wire lol) and connected to Live and Neutral then connected to the transformer on the inside.
107978
107979

Mounting wasn’t too bad. The cutouts they include helped and I taped them to some cardboard for ridgidity. They stick out a few inches which is ok since it allows the light to reflect back. Make sure to get these mounting pieces if ordering from Ali express, I think they were an extra $2 or something. For wiring I did the same thing as the transformer - just drilled all the way through and poked thru drywall
107976

Not gonna lie it looks pretty amateur on the inside, but it’s the corner of the garage and shouldn’t be disturbed so I’m fine with it for now. At some point I’ll take the drywall off and hide the wires behind. But at the same time I don’t mind having transformer outside wall vs hidden in the insulation…don’t want it to overheat and cause a fire or something.
107974

Final product looks decent enough. I need to fill the holes from the old numbers still but that’s about it. Not bad for $70 and 3 hours of time.

Nice write-up. I did mine slightly differently, I actually added a plug and wired them to that so I can plug them into the Christmas light socket. Was a bit more of a pain for soldering but I try to avoid splicing into home wiring wherever possible.

I ordered the white front since I knew they'd be going on a black background. But since I needed space behind, I painted a board with a bunch of coats of black outdoor paint, wired the numbers through that, then added a little box to the back to make space for the wires, and added that piece to the front door. Ran the wiring around and up the back to plug in to the soffet. I'll probably add some sort of cover for the transformer, maybe I'll even 3D print one.

107982

107983

Gotta clean off the spot where the old numbers were lol. Oh and I didn't have black screws handy, but I did dab some black paint over them after this pic was taken.
107984

107985

But damn they're bright. I'm messaging the seller to see if there's a plug-in dimmer that will work to bring them down a bit.

Little bit of column A, little bit of column B.

But yes, still too bright. So far in my head, my options are:
- adding an inline resistor,
- adding a dimmer either at the socket as a plug-in, or wiring directly inline,
- last resort so far is adding some sort of tinted glass cover overtop. Don't like this idea much.

Thanks! Took me awhile to figure out how I was going to attach the numbers to the house and this was what I came up with. And this is totally removable, with no marks left other than a few screwholes in the wood.

resistors on LED's don't always work as intended since you might get it flickering before you notice the brightness reducing.

I was thinking of doing this too for the front facade, but I have no idea how to seamlessly hide the wiring without drilling from the exterior into the living room. If I tap into the front porch lamp, isn't that forced to be on whenever I do the light switch on/off? So it's not time-based.

Yeah it would be linked. What I did at my place was wire in a Lutron Caseta switch for my front porch and 2x garage sconces and set up timers in the Lutron app. I like having them on as soon as sun goes down, but many times I forgot to turn them off before bed so that’s why I got the Lutron switch. Here’s my schedule with two failsafes in case I turn them back on after 11pm or after midnight for some reason:
107991

I can’t think of any reason I would want numbers on without the 3 front lights so in my case it made total sense to hook the number lights up to those. If you want them separate, you could do what doozer did and wire them to your exterior plug but then put a timer in between.

lamp_shade_2000
08-08-2022, 06:15 PM
Wyze makes smart switches as well that are a fraction of the cost of the Lutron ones. Should still allow you to set a schedule for on/off with sunset/sunrise

Exactly. And the reason I plugged the house numbers into the soffit is because I leave my front 3 lights on all night for the cameras (although now my cameras see fine at night without them), but regardless I have light-sensor bulbs in them so they're on all night and off during the day. But that's not so people can see my house, it's to help the cameras see out.

But my house numbers don't need to be on all night, and are going to be on during similar times as my Christmas tree lights, so they'll all go into the soffit plug on the same timer. So they go on at dusk, off at midnight or whatever. Which is a similar schedule to the Gemstone lights you can see in my pics. The only thing that stays on all night are the 3 primary lights.

i just used a smart socket to wire mine, set it up to turn on/off at sunset/sunrise with alexa (with other outdoor lights). wired in 12v power supply in the garage to the door socket.

pics dont turn out well , it's more clear than that normally

Well it was a few more steps than I wanted but got there in the end. Added an inline dimmer, and luckily I have a 3D printer so I printed a weatherproof box for it. I have it set to about 15% brightness, which is about right. I might even go down a bit more to maybe 10. But now I can experiment from 0-100% and figure out what I want. Also added the timer so now I can pretty much forget about them.
