Just two weeks after Dean “Boomer” Molberg announced he was leaving the station, co-host Ryan Pinder also departed Calgary’s only full-time sports station in an announcement made on-air Thursday.

He is stepping away from the station for personal reasons.

The original Boomer, Rhett and Pinder spot in the AM was actually a highly entertaining show. Rumour is they may be spinning off for their own podcast which would be amazing.

I actually caught the last sign off for Pinder.
He was leaving for personal reasons.
Reason: Had twins a couple years ago. Wife diagnosed with Colon cancer. Under went cancer treatment but he is taking the time to spend more with his family and wife. Hopefully she's ok and recovering.

I believe Rogers has been lowballing all their radio station employees. Warrener doesn't need to do the show for peanuts and Boomer clearly figured he could do something else and make more money. As for Pinder given the salary cuts it was kind of a no-brainer to just stay home and take care of his family.

Anyone know what a radio host makes? That's so far outside anything I've ever looked at it's hard to even guess.

Well I'm sure a bunch if them will pop up somewhere, probably podcasts. Post here if you hear about it. I don't use Instagram or twitter or whatever else people use to make announcements like that.

I'm betting Rogers looks at the ratings and the advertising dollars and realized that a 15% drop in either wasn't a huge number, so the host is irrelevant to profitability.

I don't know of that's true, but I'm sure that's the idea.

A worse host is a big deal for the listeners, but then again, there's a core group that will never stop listening.

I imagine for most (but not Pinder) that it's a combination of shitty offers from Rogers and them seeing the massive pot of gold that other podcasters are making and hoping they can get a piece of it. A sliver of the podcast pie is probably going to be more than AM dominance.

A lot of stations had shakeups between the Rogers/iheart aquisitions & the pandemic. I listen occasionally because of my old city work truck.

I don't know about currently salary, but back in the early 2000s I had a bud who worked for CJAY for a solid $28k/year, lol. Gerry Forbes trained him actually - Met him at a golf thing he invited me to. It wasn't great money, hours were brutal with all promotions/live events but back then you could work your way up the ladder from late night to morning show host if people liked you - I doubt it works like that now that everything is corporate though.

Speaking of radio - Anyone remember Mix 1060? Was all rock/alternative. AM radio too - I'd have to sneak listen late at night on my walkman cause the parents didn't care for it one bit, lol

I really enjoyed those 3 and had fan960 on every morning driving to work. Sad to see them all leave but they have their reasons. Steinberg seems to be the only other 'core' piece that is still there

Canada pays so much less than the US does for radio and TV broadcasting that it's a wonder that anyone would choose to make a career out of it in this country. Terrible hours of work for below Canadian average salary so it just doesn't make a lot of sense to pursue a career in the field. You can understand why Boomer and Pinder would have pulled the pin as it's not like radio is an industry that's just in a temporary slump or anything as it's in a full death spiral maybe a decade behind newspapers. Best to get out and find a new career rather than ride that out to its end.

They will definitely be missed on my morning drives to work, but as previously mentioned they are planning a podcast with a third person, just haven't heard who that person is. Not a huge podcast guy, as I usually don't have the time to sit and listen to the whole thing.

While part of this change is certainly family, writing was on the wall with the Vancouver sports radio station closing and apparently Calgary had the highest salaries for morning sports shows in Canada. I believe there is also something with the NHL radio rights changing as well, but don't know anything about that part. I would assume things will get going before September and hockey season since that seems to be the focus.

They have a real problem managing their talent/labour at the moment. With a financial cap, players can't negotiate as much on salary, so they are turning to maximizing salary and doing it in their preferred location. Usually this is not in Canada. The Canadian teams are going to turn into feeder teams more and more. Or having to overpay free agents to entice them to live in a winter wonderland.
