View Full Version : What are you asking for Christmas?

msommers
11-25-2023, 10:55 AM
Every year I struggle to come up with a list of things to ask for. Either it's way too expensive to ask or I've already bought the things I needed.

What are some <$100 items you guys get or ask for?

Hamburger patty maker, western shirt, chicken shirt, welding blanket (for traeger insulation) and small LED work lights.

Probably the only thing <$100 I would ask for/want is a dozen Pro V1s. But I have at least 6doz sitting on the shelf in my garage, so really… nothing I guess.

I threw a bunch of woodworking/metalworking stuff in my list, makes it easy for the in-laws to get me something instead of a gift card. Router bits, clamps, router insert, rasps, welding consumables, that sort of thing.

Ya they’re also wildly expensive! I’m not built for this fancy life.

Not everything is $300 there. Get a decent knife and it'll last you a lifetime. They sell stainless steel ones too so basically no maintenance.

$126
https://knifewear.com/collections/gyuto/products/tojiro-dp-gyuto-210mm-f-808

Or more flair at $196:
https://knifewear.com/collections/gyuto/products/haruyuki-soba-gyuto-210mm

The gyuto/chefs knife will do everything and if you don't have a decent knife it's the best place to start.

We just picked up a Nakiri/vegetable (it looks like a clever but it isn't) which is like 90% of our chopping needs and performs better because of the shape.

I'm not the target market here, but can someone explain to me why a chunk of nicely finished oak is worth $300? Some wood cutting boards that have actual woodworking involved (e.g., using multiple types of wood to make patterns), I get it. But those Boos ones seem like a waste of money.

How cheap do think a big chunk of hand finished in North America hardwood should be?

I have a big 1.5” thick maple one and it’s great, can’t say I extensively cross shopped it but I like it a lot better than the compound henkles one I use for cutting limes in my bar?

I think it’s highly subjective, but $300 doesn’t seem outlandish? Especially in 2023. Doesn’t take a lot of materials and labour to get to those prices imo

And I would argue if a person can't justify $900 on something special like this, they probably shouldn't be spending $300 on the plain jane one either. But who am I to say [insert Kermit sipping tea meme].

My basic knowledge is that end-grain will help retain sharpness vs these other wood options since you're cutting with the grain vs. against the grain, technically.

All that said I have a cheap wood board from Winners that we oil once a year with a rim for catching meat juices, and a couple plastic ones for tossing in the dishwasher and replacing every couple years.

$300 for maple in edge grain (!) is highway robbery. That's about $20 worth of wood and in a production environment, maybe two hours of labour. Call it $100 production cost, they are raking it in at that price point.

For $50 in-store (https://www.costco.ca/teakhaus-end-grain-butcher-block-.product.4000181641.html) you can get an end-grain teak board that's far better than the Boos unit.

Good for you. We've started helping out some poor folks through our weird charitable connections and Holy fuck - I am tearing up a little even typing this remembering the wish lists some of these little kids have.
I certainly didn't grow up in a wealthy family, but seeing a little kid asking for "my own bath towel" as a God Damn xmas present really makes me sad and amazed at the lack of money a lot of people have.
