IKEA founder nails honour as world's richest man
Last Updated Mon, 05 Apr 2004 7:27:39
STOCKHOLM - The man who made billions of dollars selling people furniture they can assemble themselves has managed to build an estate bigger than anyone else on the planet, Swedish television reported on Sunday.

Ingvar Kamprad, the 77-year-old Swede who founded the IKEA retail chain, is worth $53 billion US, according to SVT2 news.

The figure puts him ahead of Microsoft chairman Bill Gates, 49, who Forbes magazine estimates is worth $47 billion US.

Sunday's broadcast report is based on an article set to appear in the Swedish business periodical, Veckans Affarer.

Kamprad's rise to the top is based largely on the drop in the U.S. dollar, according to SVT2.

The Swedish billionaire is well known for saving pennies and looking for bargains. Kamprad, who lives in Switzerland, still owns IKEA but no longer runs its daily operations.

I was always under the impression that Gates never was the world's richest man (USA, maybe). I thought there were like kings in the middle east that had more money from him from all the oil? :dunno:

I dunno, but I do know if Bill Gates tried to collect all his money over a short period of time, he would be nowhere near the top of the list....

2 reasons, capital gains, and him selling huge quantities of stock would destroy the stocks value....

LOL, ok, ok, I just dislike the focker ;)

I think the founder of walmart died, and distributed his fortune among some of his family and they're still some of the richest ppl in the world, even when it was divided:eek:

i dont think that having stock value like they do really counts for as toma said, they cant actually use the money in terms of cash for selling their shares would kill the market for that companies shares.

Interest alone would be tuff to chew through...

50,000,000,000 @ 6% (thats conservative with that kind of capital) = almost 3billion/year in interest ALONE!

~250,000,000/Month
~8,000,000/Day

Again, that interest alone!

Hmmmmm that would be nice :D, honestly if you had 46.6 billion all your ancestor would never ever have to work in their lives it would go on for hundreds of years. I mean the interest alone would secure a generation. When he would die he could spread it to 46 friends and family members and it still wouldn’t run out for hundreds of years.

I think collectively all of the Walton kids put together may be ahead of Gates. But Gates is way ahead of Buffett and #2.

After 1 billion, I don't think it even matters anymore. It's not like you can spend that much money in a lifetime anyway!

Yeah man... I billion is gone in a flash. I say 100billion is virtually impossible to spend unless you speaking in terms of a major major corporation. I mean with a 100billion you could fund the entire Iraq war by yourself!!! both sides!!!

The richest of the waltons that inherited is Anne, her net worth is only $2.3B. Nancy Laurie isn't even listed on the top 400 richest people list on forbes.

^^^^^^^^^

Where are you getting your numbers? Forbes lists 5 of the Walton kids at $20.5 B big ones. If Sam Walton only had one descendant, he/she would big richest by a long shot.

gates lost only because th e us dollars dropping
imagin the us dollar going up just 5 one-hundreths of a cent
now magnify that on a 47 billion dollar scale

that increase would be a bit more than most of us make in what, 13 lifetimes?
