I got challenged by a guy with a 2000 toyota celica gt-s. Do I even have a chance with my 97 eclispse GS? As far as I know, both cars are stock. Anything I can do to even stand a chance? Yeah this is my first time drag racing.

What does the Toyota weigh? What horsepower does it produce? Look it up on the net.
Your eclipse is a wee bit heavier and if you have the 2.4 l.engine (Is that wwhat you have?) you produce more torque than the Celica. If you shift well, you may get the jump on him using torque, as the Totota is a peaky little motor, he will not get off the line as well. Then you have to stay ahead of him. Time stands still while you are headed down the quarter mile.

What transmissions are in both cars?

I raced a new Celica GT-S last year at Secret Street. He ran low 17's but he was a crappy driver. Mine was auto and his was manual.

Well both car's are manual. The Celica get's 180 horses at 7600 RPM and 130 torque at 6800. My cars got a 2.0L engine and only puts out 140hp and 130 lbs of torque. A buddy of mine told me to push the car into 8000RPM before shifting outta 1st and 2nd gear to make up for having less horses. Don't think i wanna do it but to shut some people up i guess you gotta do what you gotta do.

^^^^^^^

I dunno, that might just over-rev your engine and cause you to actually produce less power.

The higher your tach goes, doesn't always equal more power!

just an example every car is different some car have more power after the redline some cars almost shut off after the redline :guns:

hahaha, you buddy is an idiot! haha, there is no power that high, you are only hurting the engine. but no, you will not win unless the guy in the celica totally bunks up

ok, guess i'm screwed then. but heck. with a little money and a whole lotta work, I could break 9 sec, 1/4 mile. Make that a whole lotta money.

k this is what I wanna know... why is it that new cars with more HP than mine run slower times? I mean my fastest run is a 16.5, with most common run at 16.6. My car is heavier, and only got 160 hp if I'm lucky! Why? Can somone explain this to me?

Traction, gearing, drive wheels, lots of factors.

You won't be able to run the motor that high. The DSM ECU cuts fuel delivery at 7500rpm. The 4g63 would most likely handle it anyway. It has so far been a tolerable motor for idiots.

hahaha. I somehow won. He got cocky, and stay by my side for most of the race, but then blew it in the last few hundred yards or so trying to double clutch. At least that was his excuse. He beat me of the line then I caught up. He said he "allowed" me to. Half way through it i was thinking that he should be like at least a car length ahead, but he was right beside me gawking at me. Then pow, i heard his engine whine like a cat in heat and i blew by em.
