So I usually drive by here, cause they always have some pretty sweet cars out in front. Anyways, I was driving home, and I turned my heads towards there, and there it was! Sweet oh mighty GTR! I didn't believe it at first, so I turned around and went right into the parking lot. Shock came over me, it really was a GTR, not an Impala! Obviously it's illegal, because GTR's aren't legal till August at the earliest. I tried to get better pics, but it was angled parked into the building, anyways... heres the pics! ENJOY!

[EDIT]Whoa, just told some of my other car friends, and they heard from someone else that this is a 90 model year, not even a 89.... perhaps one of the Import Concern guys know more...

Oh man, when I first drove up to the parking lot... utter disbelief. I just sat there for 10 minutes marvelling at it. I was so shocked that my hands trembled so much trying to take the pics. Also wondering if the owner or whatever was gonna come out, cause it looked like I wanted to jack it. People in the cars passing by sured looked at me funny, cause I was taking pics of this "old" car, lol.

The Skyline that's been in Edmonton for a while now is a GTS-T. From what I heard, it's been heavily modded, and the guy is trying to make a quick buck by listing it for $17k in the Autotrader.

Also, this isn't a re-badged Skyline. You can tell, because the GTR's have the front grill, while the others like the GTS4, GTS, GTS-T, etc don't have front grills. The hood on those cars come straight down to the front fascia... unless it's had a conversion done or something...

Either it's registered as an older year (88) JDM vehicle, or any thing else that's available here. I heard rumors that it was regged as a land rover?

Nope, this is an illegal car :).

Pretty crazy that ppl are taking such risks, especially with how anal alberta insurnace is when it comes to claim time.

What year is that skyline?

blinkme_210
04-09-2004, 09:33 AM
Apparently it's a year 90 model.

mx73somebody of Import Concern said on another forum that the owner told him he imported it up from San Fransico. Which we all know is a lie. Even if he did import it from San Fransico, GTR's aren't legal for another 4 months.

I got a call from the guy who sold me a Harley Davidson telling me that he was now bringing cars from Japan into Canada. He told me that he had a couple of Skylines here and wanted to know if I was looking for one or knew of anyone who was interested. He said that one was a GT-R and had something like 700 hp. I believe the asking price for that car was around $35,000.

LOL, you're talking like its an Enzo or something.

Nice car, but its only so great here right now cause of the whole "grass is greener on the other side" factor

Although you have a point on the novelty factor, I don't believe that any car available here has as nice an engine as the RB. The only thing i can think of is the 2JZ-GTE.

This guy has imported 4 GT-Rs, some GTS-t's, some Z32 Fairlady Z's, 180SX, FD RX-7, and they're all illegally imported. Declared as 1988 when they are 1989-1993 manufactured. Someone even spotted an early EVO up here.

Do not buy these cars, it's a matter of time before Canada Customs and Transport Canada catches up with them, and they won't necessarily go after the guy who imported them, but rather the person holding the car at the time. These cars WILL get seized or exported at the current owner's expense.

If you know someone who is considering buying one of these cars, make sure they know what they are getting into before buying. For anyone who has bought one already, I highly suggest taking the car back to the seller and asking for your money back. If that doesn't work, I would consult a lawyer fast.

I don't want to worry anyone, there's just a few bad importers out there, make sure you know the reputation of the importer you choose before buying. They're not all bad.

redbaron303

In addition to what Aerocabin has said.

As a buyer people need to research their purchase. They need to understand what they are purchasing and possibly getting into, from maintanence to legality.

It's our policy that we at Import Concern Inc. will not import illegal vehicles and only follow the proper importation procedures and laws to make sure our customers aren't at risk for having their property seized and crushed. We don't want to see our customers charged with insurance fraud, fraudulantly registering a vehicle, and many other bad things that come out of lieing about what a car is.... Ie: "88 MR2 = 96 MR2" or "88 GTR = August 89 + GTR"

Look at what Rage2 said, is it worth the risk to purchase something that's "hot" like this so you'll be the one getting burned in the end? Please make a conscious choice in choosing your imported car and realize that not everyone is out there to be honest nor to be enthusiasts helping ppl enjoy these cars w/ out risk.

There is lots to consider when purchasing an out of country/province car, so make the wise choice and deal w/ reputable people while having done your research to make sure you're not getting taken.

The Skyline was never introduced to Canada probably b/c of some belief that it would destroy the American sports car market much like the Supra, 300ZX TT, and FD3S were.... :dunno: (just speculation)

I don't think we'll ever have a solid reason why this car never came to North America, but for some reason Nissan witheld it from us, just like the turbo variation of the 240sx (JDM Silvia/180SX).

Here are some pictures of currently illegally imported JDM machines in Alberta (my advice would be to not buy one of these unless you want problems for yourself) of which include some Skylines: http://forums.beyond.ca/showthread.php?s=&postid=558145#post558145

The variations of Skyline - GTS25, GTST, GTS4, GTR all in the R32 lineup, which is what is nearly available for legal import to Canada starting next month. GTS25 was an NA RB25DE engine, the GTST/GTS4 were RB20DET, and the GTR was the famous RB26DETT..... IMO any of them are a fun car but definatly not cheap to keep :)

The Skylines weren't designed with the north american market in mind, much like tons of other japanese cars don't make it over here. The GTR was created for Nissan to win races, and because they choose the skyline platform, it would be astronomical to bring them to north america, redesigning the platform to comply to NA rules, as well as drivetrain certification.

If they choose to use the 300zx platform for a GTR, chances would be better, but they'd still have to invest in certifying a new drivetrain, which would've most likely made it very expensive here... basically a money losing car or a low profit car. It didn't make business sense at all to have 'em here.

Even in the japanese market, the RB series motor and even the SR20 series motors were fairly costly to produce, which is why Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn scrapped 'em to cut costs. At least Nissan is profitable and still around... they would've gone under without moving towards today's direction.

You guys probably can tell me - is it possible to make a counterfeit Skyline out os a 240SX? What will be required, if it is possible?
How much potential does the 240SX engine have compared to the b18/b20 or the DSM's?
