i've been wondering this for a while.

the 1jz is the older model, but can it not handle as much power as the 2jz? does it just make less power?

whats the deal?

The 1JZ is 2.5 liter, the 2JZ is 3.0. The 1JZ has weaker internals when compared to the 2JZ.

isnt the 1jz a 3.0 single turbo for the MK3 turbo supras? and the 2jZ is a 3.0 TT for the MK4s?
i thought the 7mGTE was the 2.5?

2JZ is the 3.0L motor

2JZ-GE is the NA motor
2JZ-GTE is the Twin Turbo Motor

the 1JZ wasn't used for Supra duty.

MKIII had 7M-GTE, MKIV had 2JZ

And yes, 1JZ is the 2.5L and comes in GE and GTE variants

Correctione....the 1JZ-GTE WAS used in the Mk III Supra in Japan. JZA70. As was the 1G-GTE.

(Sorry it's not really a correction, more of an addition)

2JZ = forged internals = stronger motor

1JZ = 2.5L I-6
2JZ = 3.0L I-6

They have the same bore, different strokes, 2JZ has a slightly stronger bottom end, but the 1JZ can still handle a LOT of power, they both share a lot of stuff.

In the Supras the 1JZ was Parallel Twin Turbo, and the 2JZ was Sequential Twin Turbo.

All MK3 Supras in North America came with the 7M 3.0L stock (7M-GE or 7M-GTE). In other countries the 1JZ-GTE was offered as was the 2.0L I-6 1G-GE and 1G-GTE (Twin Turbo).

1JZ was also used in other cars, as was the 7M and 2JZ.

Supra Info:

MA46 = 4M-E equpped Supra
MA47 = 5M-E equipped Supra

MA67 = 5M-GE equipped Supra
MA6x = 6M-GE equipped Supra

GA70 = 1G-(GE/GTE) equipped Supra
MA70 = 7M-(GE/GTE) equipped Supra
JZA70 = 1JZ-GTE equipped Supra

JZA80 = 2JZ-(GE/GTE) equipped Supra
