so far i have built the custom sub box, the trim panels for around the box, and the door panels, all have been sprayed with 3 coats of DuPont White, and 10 coats of clear...overall product looks good...that box hammers(yes those are 15's)
i realize this may be overkill...but ah well...i like my music..
amp rack and remaining trim panels are in the planning stage...
let me know what you think of it so far!

Just needs a little bit of furnishing to cover up those rear strut towers and maybe a baffle to hide the subs from thieving eyes.

Just exactly, how tall is the box? Did you have to build into the spare wheel well as well?

Nice workmanship.
Was the fiberglass your work?

Hmm, I'd be interested to hear this once it's all completed.
I'm in the middle of my fiberglass project, boxing up 2 MTX 6000 series 15's. I left enough room for the Alpine type r 15's though, since I know they will definately out-perform the MTX's.

what kinda amp(s) are you using?
with this box i am thinking i should be hitting a minimum of 145db...
i better after spending all this time on my install...
if you live in calgary, i'll let you have a listen when its all done,
june 1st my car will be back on the road for a couple of months...
so we'll hook up then if you are still interested.

yup, and the rest is still in the fabrication stage(sanding/paint) accept for the amp rack...its going in where the back seat used to be, and that is still in the framing phaze...

well.... the sub box it self it would cost you a minimum of $1100 at any stereo shop here in calgary and that would not include trim panels or anything just the any trim panels or anything just the box...it takes a fukin long time to build this stuff, and lots and lots of patience

i'll burp it for you this summer sometime a a beyond meet or somethin':thumbsup:

before i decided to take on this job, i went around to different audio shops in calgary...i wanted fiberglass door panels, and a full fiberglass pull from just behind the front seats to the hatch...all panels had to be painted and cleared to perfection...
the cheapest bid was $11k(not including any gear or wiring) and i don't think that guy had ever worked with fiberglass to this degree...so in summary...becareful...to many installers out there "lowball" and then realize how much work there is to do...so the quality level goes down big time...

but once again thanx for all the compliments.

Sealed is never ever louder. Ported boxes, if you build them right, are around 6-9dB louder (which is the same as quadrupling the amount of subs you have).
I dunno what all this BS with 15s being louder in sealed boxes is. Some guy at Visions was trying to tell me that too.

And then the post beneath that. Sealed box's advantages are tighter bass, quieter bass, and less space. Ported box's advantages are louder bass but slightly worse SQ. And with most half-decent subs, the different in SQ is so small it's not even worth considering.

porker39

Sealed is never ever louder.

not always true some boxes need sealed so they can work properly. and sealed is not always louder b/c there hitting off air sealed there is no air flow creating louder bass

porker39
05-03-2004, 08:31 PM
my bad i meant ported is not always louder

slaya15
05-03-2004, 08:44 PM
lol guess im the moron here thought porker said the box wasnt ported, missed that part, hehe whoops

and in my opinon-
sealed=maximum bass
ported=maximum db
bandpass=i dont know

this guy knows what the fuck is goin on.
ported boxes are louder 99% of the time...and the increase in Db is definately noticeable...15's are not really designed for SQ, however...with enough power 15's can sound just as good as 12's...its all about how much power you have, the box volume, and port size...these are key elements to a bumpin' system...don't get me wrong...i have a sealed box containing 2 10 inch RF-HE2's, and they hammer pretty good...but i've always loved the "dragie" bass of 15's...and this box is a lil larger than ALPINE calls for...but they are lovin life...i hooked them up off an old school 750(max) watt ALPINE V12 amp and it shook my eyes...now running 650 RMS to each sub should definately hump!
the install is about 100 hours short of being all said and done!
i will probably have more pics up in the next few days! so keep checkin....:thumbsup:

I think to myself, and wonder if half the ppl that post in the section of the forum actually know what the hell porting a sub means? I dont mean to jack your thread, but it doesn't seem like ppl understand the concept.

PS, most calgary car audio salesmans are the worst knowledged ppl on earth...

i dont no earth quake b/c my and my bro bought subs with a ported box and it sounded like shit. so the next day we went and bought a sealed box and they were so much louder and working to their full potencial:dunno:

EarthWake_Audio
05-04-2004, 01:22 PM
was the box custom made and spec'd to the subs? or was it a pre-fabricated box for like $100 at visions, or soundsaround?
the box will make or break the over all sound output

porker39
05-04-2004, 01:49 PM
no it was not customed to the subs just a sealed box for 2 12s

I never singled anyone out there Earthquake, I'm saying I hate being fed BS, when I know more than the salesman. It's not very good for business, if I am showing the sales rep how to use an alpine deck or about sound deadening advantages, or how the manger doesn't know what line of amps he has in his car because he's trying to make up some line to make me buy his JL amps. Great story about that manager too, but for another time.
