Its fairly common for VW vans to end up with subaru motors for power if the originals let go. Course, most of them don't end up with turbo EJ20s but hey all the power to him.

the engine is in the back, like most vans VW made. It used a flat 4 engine derived from the old old old beetle air cooled engines. Not too much power. That intake would help to explain how he kept the air cool.
