Run regular instead on the civic, and you'll see over 500km easy. I drive my civic hard and see 500km, 560km if I go easy.

Are you puffing black smoke? Black smoke means excess fuel burnt. Try a tune up, thats what I am doing on mine to try to get some more miles out of a tank! BTW, from a full tank (65 liters) goes empty in a week!

Jeez!
Yeah, I saw the prices going up, but I was in a real hurry, I got lucky, the esso in Coventry (where I was headed) stayed low until I got out of physio.
Been running right beside the 'R' (crazy germans =) for a couple days now. Just did some work on the car, wanted to see exactly how much better the mileage got (pretty good, from 14.5L/100km to 11.2L/100km, saves me about $11 a tank).

It's the @#$%%# taxes I tell ya. They don't jump by 2 or 3 cents anymore because of the damn taxes.

The gas station owners doesn't make much out of this either. All the $$$ goes to the government and the oil companies.

Why would Martin promise gas tax back to the cities? Because he knows the money that goes back to the cities is peanuts compare the extra taxes coming in during high gas prices.

But consider yourself lucky living in oil town. At least some of the money flow back to our businesses.

Ya but look at the torque #'s:

Gas: 82 lb.-ft. @ 4,200 rpm
Electric: 295 lb.-ft. @ 0-1,200 rpm :nut:

Torque is all you need for getting around town.

my grandpa has a toyota prius, he took me for a ride in it, it has a display that shows fuel consumption, which engines are on, when the battery is being charged, etc. for the whole drive the mileage was in the 0-5L/100km range  that's like 900 km/tank (45 L tank)
it accelerated about the same as your standard economy compact.

They're so quiet too. I really applaud people for buying them. Although I question what disposing of that many batteries will do to the environment over the emissions saved.

Good thing I did all that work on my car, really helped out my mileage, and my pocket book through these hard times.

A little off topic, but why are all the hybrids gasoline/electric, and not diesel/electric, is it because of the repetetive starts, and that starting a diesel that many times would be inefficient?

#1 Diesel in North America is crap (too high sulfur content) and distribution network is inferior compare to gasoline.

#2 A good well tune Diesel engine still put more pollutent in air than a standard unclean gasoline engine.

Hybrid is a good idea but only under this circumstances:

On average a hybrid is about $6000 more than a non hybrid equivalent:

Camry 4-cyl $25K Prius: $30K Difference: $5K
Civic - $22K Civic Hybrid: $28.5K Difference: $6.5K

Since there isn't any history on battery durability, let say it needs a replacment in about 7 years. So the question is, will you save $6K of gas in 7 years?

Average driver do 20,000km /year. Gas usage for each of the vehicles above:

Camry: 1800L ---- Prius: 1200L --- Saving: 600L/year
Civic: 1400L ----- Civic H: 1000L ---- Saving: 400L/year

So in order to get my $6000 investment back over the 7 years, the gas price must be:

Camry/Prius: $1.43/L
Civic/CivicH: $2.14/L

And believe me, economy is already tanking at $0.80/L gas prices. I hope we won't see that kind of gas price in 7 years, otherwise, we have more to worry about than gas. So none of the hybrid make economic sense right now.

Now, if they start to offer hybrid cars @ normal car prices, than real saving kicks in. But I think that's still a few years away.

But if you really look at mpg perspective, diesel is actually very close to hybrids. If gas production company start to invest in post production of diesel, it's actually a better/cheaper alternative to hybrids.

Plus as someone said before, where is all these NiMH batteries gonna go when they expires?

And don't every get me started on prospect of fuel cell cars.......

Did the calc on the fuel economy on my Jetta (1.8T) it works out to about 33mpg. Not shabby for a turbo but then we don't drive the crap out of the car.

It sucks the price of gas - but I work in O&G so I eat it at the pump but it helps the bottom end when I get my bonus next year..... what can we do - boycot the gas stations?

I dunno... I really dont mind the high gas prices.

sure we are paying a few bucks more each fill... but the higher gas prices are, the more money Alberta makes...

the more money Alberta makes... the sooner they will be able to remove the need for provincial income tax.

not to mention more hospitals, schools and crap like that.

Just thank god that we live in Alberta where all these oil money will come back to you in some way or form.

BTW, back to hybrid, now they are saying you only get about 60% of their mileage claim by the manufacturers in real world driving. So it's all false advertising.

Just be glad we dont have to pay the pst tax just like every other province in this country.
anyways,
I heard on the news that gas prices are expected to peak during the summer (which means we havent suffered through the worst yet) and gas prices will finally drop down during the fall (not sure how far it'll drop but hopefully low enough)
