Sun damage is permanent correct? The new car I'm getting:

has some sun damage on the hatchback, not a problem to me, but if I was going to fix it, would it have to be a repaint?

Sun damage is permanent and needs to be repainted, although if it is minor fading of the paint, if it has a clearcoat finish it can be improved upon by polishing. But it can not be repaired perfectly without repainting.

hmm its hard to say by the pics how bad the damage is. I had sun damage on my car (from the florida sun), some parts had to be repainted (mostly the urethane bumper) some parts i could polish out (like the trunk etc.)
