Timing belt broke(91 honda civic 1.5)

first off run a compression test in all cylinders to make sure that you haven't lost compression due to bent valves. Most likely you did bend valves but who knows you might be one lucky SOB. If they are off comes the head. if not, replacing the timing belt should take about 3 hours

How is he supposed to run a compression test first with a broken timing belt?

i might have bent valve but i did here a bang or anything so i am hoping it is just the belt. if the valve are bent i am putting a B20 in it

You dont necessarily have to hear anything at all. The only way to find out is to check. Better yet, use it as an excuse to get a b20 :D

Its an easy fix. No harder than changing the head gasket :zzz: I think the valves are about $25 from honda. So if you get a haynes manual, take a day and fix it yourself the total cost should be around:

New headgasket: $80
2 New valves: (at least) $50
Haynes manual: $25
Partsource valve spring compressor rental: $ Free

Well it turns out that i didn't bend any valves and i found out where my oil leak was from, it was my crankshaft seal

If you break a belt there nothing there to turn your cam so your valves are in the closed postion and your car will just shut off, but if the belt skips a cog than u run the risk of hitting a valve.

i cant believe what a ripoff honda is...$25/valve??? Dodge valves are $7 :eek: damn

Anyways you forgot to add another $80 or so for new headbolts and about the same for a new timing belt. I recommend you spend the extra money and get a good belt from the stealership rather than a cheaper one from places like creappy tire. The crappy tire belt i bought lasted about 10k before i noticed a couple cracks in it while swapping in a cam.

if you think you didnt bend the valves, consider pulling the head and seeing if theres any piston damage,

some knob in my auto class geve me his engine because he broke his timing belt, he thought it fucked up everything but the valves hit the pistons but no big damage like a craked piston or anything

Nope, for an n/a honda reusing the stock head bolts is fine. $80 is for an oem gasket. You wana know the real rip off??? Stock honda head bolts are $25 each :eek:

the d15(88-91) are non interference engines so if you broke your timing belt just replace it and redo your timing, you should have zero damage to valve train.
