The perfect host
Although having only featured on the World Rally Championship calendar for the last four seasons, the Cyprus Rally is, in essence, what the sport is all about. You take a beautiful island, steeped in history and basking in a climate to die for, with a stunning landscape combining rugged countryside and sandy beaches, and drop into this £400k of extremely high-tech WRC machinery and let men of extreme talent hurtle along twisty, gravel roads at bowel-clenching speeds, while being urged on by enthusiastic spectators. Fantastic!
Holiday heritage
Cyprus - the third-largest island in the Mediterranean – is an incredibly popular holiday destination. As a result, spectators travelling to the rally, based in the bustling, seaside resort of Limassol (also known as Lemesos), will be well catered for. Cyprus has a rich, 9000-year heritage so, while soaking up the sun and watching the rally are musts, you should also take time out to explore the ancient ruins – a welcome change of pace after the bustle of the tourist centres.
Hot, wet and sticky
Although the Cyprus rally's headquarters is in Limassol, the stages are run near Paphos, further to west. Some can be a bit hard to get to, but they're well worth the effort. Don't forget when you're there to slip on your cossie and go for a swim. The Greek goddess of love, Aphrodite was said to have risen out of the sea here. Although the rally will be held earlier in the year in 2004, you should still dress for warm weather (expect temperatures of around 26C). Spectating here can be just as much of an endurance event as competing.
Survival of the fittest
Very much in the mould of the Acropolis Rally, Cyprus is a tough, car-breaking gravel event. It has a reputation for the twistiest stages on the calendar, but it also has fast, open, top-gear blasts as well. The gravel roads can throw up clouds of dust as cars barrel through the stages, and early runners often end up sweeping the road for their rivals. Temperatures could well soar to over 50 degrees centigrade inside the cars as well, putting tremendous pressure on the drivers, co-drivers, and the engines, as well.
