Aight well after a long battle with my old car, 92 Mazda MX-3 GS i decided to give up and get a new car. I have anywhere from 5- 8000 bucks tops, to work with so i'm trying to figure out what to get. I know DSM is the best bang for my buck, but i've heard about alot of reliability problems, Big C recommended a 90-94 240 sx but i'd rather hear from a 240 owner and people with experience before i decide on that one, i've also thought about a Honda Civic Si, due to the fact that there is so much out there for honda when it come to aftermarket, and they're known for reliability, but i'm not sure if i wanna be driving another Honda like everybody else? If anybody has suggestions, or experience let me know!

for $8k you could get a 4th gen lude:thumbsup:
but i'm biased.
but if you want a nice reliable car for $8k, I say get a 92-95 Civic.

well i got rid of the precidia for many reasons:
1) The car had mad problemz, from the moment i bought it
2) didn't have the power i was looking for.
3) it was an Automatic, and i'm more a manual tranny fan.
4) It had an insane oil leak, that not the "geniuses" at Kramer Mazda could fix.
5) 1200 bucks later mazda still couldn't fix it,
6) I didn't wanna deal with those fuckers anymore.

I've always been a fan of probes, but i like mx-6's better. But the mx-3, mx-6, and probe all come form the same K-series engines, which gave me so much grief so i rather try something with more power and reliability for a change. I'm really thinking about a 240 but i want some more input, and about the Prelude 8g's is a little high in my opinion, and i couldn't even get a VTEC prelude with that! and i think hondas without VTEC are crap

i think a 91-93 240sx would be a good choice

You should get a VW!.....scratch the 240 idea man, unless you have a winter beater? there slow, and RWD wont be good in the winter. you could pick up a nice 90-92 GTI 16v for that price range. :dunno:

Fucking rights ... or you could buy a '88 (MK2 Style) Jetta 2-door ... for 2 grand ... drop a 1.8T in it and you would have a 14 sec. Car ... all for under 8 grand.

Exactly why I stopped using those tools too! :guns: :banghead: Sunridge is further but worth the drive! :)

If you haven't totally given up on Mazda's, why not try the 1st gen Turbo MX6? They're around $4K and pretty reliable. :)

As a owner of 240, I can tell u for a fact that 240 is a pain in the b*** to drive in the winter (especially if you were to use SUMMER tires), but I heard even with snow tire, 240 is a bit too light to really grip the road....

so....it is an awesome summer drift car, but yeah.....u will likely need a winter beater when the time comes.

p.s GO for the coupe, it is less popular in calgary. ALSO watch out for the fuel injector problem, all 240's have a poorly designed fuel injector set up (unless you want to swap to SR20DET, the factory engine oversea)

I have the KA24DE in my car and have never had any problems with it. Good torque too (relatively speaking of course ):nut:

How about a DSM (eagle talon, laser, eclipse) all wheel drive turbo. Does anybody have any experience with these cars? What kind of mechanical problems do they have and what some reliability issues?:dunno:

Talons need to have their timing belt changed every 20-40 thou kms.... I'd suggest to get a 90-91 talon.... The fwd ones are probably better than the awd....

How about a 88-89 Toyota MR2 S/C. Not super fast but piles of fun.

A 84-85 Mazda RX-7 GSL-SE would be nice too.

A 302 Mustang is nice if you can get one that hasn't been beat.

DSM are always nice but be prepared to either work on it yourself or have a sock full of cash ready.

A Porsche 924 would be nice also.

Also think about a winter beater/summer car arrangement. I always drive a POS in winter and a "interesting" car in summer. Currently a 74 Spitfire (slow but really fun).

How 'bout a '91 CRX?:D

I would say for sake of being different get a:

91-94 Talon AWD Turbo-There is good potential for HP and we carry some mad new aero kits for that car to spruce up the looks

if a Civic buy a 92-95 Hatch with like 300,000K on it and swap baby swap.....Car=$5K Swap=$3K if you can a good hookup and someone who wants to a free install.

Well i've always liked Talons but not really into crx's, and i also like civics but i'm not a fan of the hatchbacks, so what kinda of work is require to mantain a Talon? are parts/service expensive?

Well depending on how old it is, you'll have to keep an eye on things like the turbo and associated cooling system, and the infamous 1-2 gear crunch. The block is rock solid but the timing belt must be replaced as scheduled. Really it comes down to whether the previous owner took good care of the car (or not as the case usually is).

Man how wrong can you be? Timing belts need replacing approx. every 80,000 kms (or sooner). The best year in the 1st gen is '93 or '94 because they made the tranny a lot stronger. I would avoid the 90 year altogether because so many parts changed on it after that (i.e. hard to find!) .

If you could find the rare early '92 with the 4-bolt rear end and 6-bolt motor then you're really set!

Oh and AWD 0wnz j00 !!

Yeah a 93 talon tsi would be quite nice, and it wouldn't take that much work to make fast

yeah i remember you althought i still think BLIKMIKS KL-ZE precidia was pretty tight, my mx-3 has been giving me shit so i had to get rid of it. Yeah i guess honda sounds good, and i do like the styling of the coupes much better then the hatchbacks. Hou much did you pay for yours Chris? and what kinda of work have you done to it since?

a bit late but I would say either a 924 or 944, apart from the fact that porsches are built to last (remember these cars were 100,000 when they were first released) and if you want to splurge a bit you could get a 944S turbo for a little more than 8 grand (second hand obviously so you have to be careful buying, people usually only sell those sort of cars if there is something wrong with it)

Of course it really depends on what you are planning to do with it.

It may be difficult to find a 1st gen Eclipse handily, hower an AWD Talon is the way to go. Fun all year round. Like DSM Power said, the timing belt needs to be replaced (and balance shaft and tensioner), every 80,000km or so. I have had my talon for 4 years, and that has been the only major repair needed. With regular maintenance and safe modding (my DSM friends can laugh at the irony in my comment), they can go for a long time!

I LOVE my DSM.
(and my RX7s...)

For a beater you can't beat a Chevette for the $$$. Ugly, slow but really reliable. If you don't believe try to kill one.

P. Daddy Pedro
10-21-2002, 11:24 PM
chevette? really? those are ugly, yeah but they are reliable hey? you seem to know from experience. DId you try to kill one?

Arthur Dent
10-22-2002, 07:53 AM
Yeah. I never owned one myself but knew many people who did. A couple of friends had them for a few years. Regular maintaince seemly meant nothing to them but the cars just keep going. One particular time we used one for about a month for "rallying" in BC. We took it off jumps, drove into trees and generally abused the thing off road. Sold it for $500 after the month as it was still running fine - although body work had some new dents and scratches.

It is really ugly and slow (very slow) but excellent cheap motoring.

I thinks NX2000's are pretty ugly, but they are quick and strong.

Stock you can take on a civic SIR

Ferrari

i'd go witha civic , i know a lot of people have them, but that's for one reason only: there great cars!! really light, quick, reliable, etc.

civics are good, but they're overpriced. And there is NO way an NX could be an SI R. I don't think so!

10-22-2002, 09:22 PM
Well maybe i was a bit overzealous...I think they are equal...its a drivers race starting from 0. Unless you are way up in the top end, the civic gets the heads up there.
