Porsches are not very prone to rust, the bodies were coated with zinc I beleive. Good price for a guards red S

I think I saw this car yesterday... pretty good shape. Is zinc coating the same as galvanizing? I know that all the fenders and such on Porsches are galvanized.

Why aren't all cars galvanized and/or zinc coated? Is it expensive?

Hehehe, I was waiting for that question to come up.
Okie dokie, here's the basics on galvanizing. First, it is properly known as hot-galvanizing. This is because it is done at a VERY high temperature, quite near the melting point of zinc, but I am not sure of the exact temperature. This ensures that the zinc will properly bond to the steel. There is such thing as cold galvanizing, but the process is completely different, and the results are questionable.
So, to hot-galvanize, you need all bare metal parts, so this has to be done before any under-coating, or any plastic parts are attached to the car. So, the entire body of the car is dipped as one piece, then the fenders, hood, doors, etc are done seperately.
For this reason, the undercarriage is galvanized.

Now, galvanizing is technically adding a thin plating of zinc to the outside of the steel. Since zinc is very high up on the oxidation-half-reaction table, it is not very prone to react with other chemicals, such as road salt or water. (Technically I believe this is due to it's electronegativity, but I am not 100% sure on that).
So, it does quite a bit to prevent corrosion, providing the zinc coating is intact. Now, if the coating gets chipped at by rocks and such, it will chip the zinc away, and will allow the steel to rust.

So, why are all of the cars out there not galvanized? Mainly cost. It would add roughly $2000 - $3000 to every car produced to galvanize all of the steel body parts.

This is why most auto-makers choose to simply use a better under-coating on their cars, than galvanize the entire body. Also, if a panel is zinc coated, it makes it slightly more difficult to paint, you need to use special self-etching primers, that are designed to work with a zinc coating. This also requires much extra work when doing any body repairs, since you cannot weld studs to the panel without affecting the zinc coating, and repeated hammering can cause the coating to flake (Although this is pretty rare).

At this point, that's probably more than you ever wanted to know about galvanizing.

So, back to the 944. The undercarriages are completely coated with proper undercoating, so usually rust is not an issue down there.
However, I must say, that mine is an 86, and I can see many spots where the undercoating has peeled off.

Since the car is from out east, where they do salt much more than we do (if that's possible!), there will probably be some rust on the undercarriage.
