I'm looking at building a 914 track car. I just bought a shell from California and now have to find an engine (see pic). The car comes with everything to bolt on a Porsche 6 cylinder engine so now it's up to me to find one. Anyone have one laying around the care to let go cheap? ;) Seriously though, if you know the whereabouts of a good 3.2 or 3.6 engine let me know. I weighed the car at the scales where I work and it came in at 1400 lbs without an engine or transmission. I'm guessing it should be around 2100 lbs when it's done.

And another pic.....(don't mind the wheel well clearance...that will drop considerably with an engine in the car)

Let me know if you need a co-driver :D.

The body kit is made by Sheridan. I think it looks great. This body kit is slightly wider than mine. Here is a pic of their car.

Here is a car like mine. The fenders are not quite as flared as the Sheridan racing car but still pretty big. My cars dimensions are 70 3/4 inches wide up front and 72 inches wide in the back. The Sheridan car is 76 inches front and 77 inches rear. My car doesn't have the rear spoiler but I'm considering getting one like on this car or on the Sheridan car. Any thoughts?

Rage: *lol* I could probably use a "co-financer" more than a co-driver.....seems to be no shortage of offers for one of the positions and no takers for the other... ;) Besides, how much power would it need to keep you satisfied?

I'm also considering repainting the car before putting an engine in it. I'm considering a pearl yellow - like what came on a late 90's NSX. I also really like the color of the Sheridan car and was also thinking of a candy apple red. Any thoughts or other suggestions?

That's going to be so fun to drive! I don't know where to find an engine tho, sorry. What's the body made out of? Fiberglass?

soloracer

The wide body kit is fiberglass. I just took a tape measure to my car and the back is actually 76 inches across which leads me to believe my car might be a combo of body kits. The front of the green car and the back of the Sheridan car. Interesting.....I'll have to do a little more research I think.

solo, as soon as I get to school I can do a search for you. I was looking at doing something like rage2 and came across MANY sources for good used Porsche engines. Last I remember it was $1400 American for the engine used...

Nice! I've been looking for a nice 914 for the last 5 years now. I think all the ones for sale up here all have broken bodys. :( Urs looks pretty good tho! Nice find!

infamous: no new 3.6 tt here - the new 6 cylinder Porsche engines are all water cooled and that would require a radiator up front. The car is set up for an air cooled Porsche 6 cylinder and has a front mount oil cooler already installed. I've considered a turbo engine but the plumbing to put in a front mount intercooler would be too long (from the front of the car to the back) and lead to horrible boost lag.

Arthur Dent: I'm considering a Chevy or Ford V8 and I have researched a fair bit about the swap (I know about both Renegade Hybrids and Kennedy Engineering). I've also considered a Buick V6 or a Mazda Rotary. But all these also require radiators and each has their own pluses and minuses. Since the car is already set up for a Porsche 6 that is where I would like to stay. Plus I like the idea of keeping it all Porsche.

legendboy: I got this one out of California. Good thing I work for a trucking company or the shipping could of been costly. There is a really nice 914 with a 3.2 6 cylinder engine for sale in Calgary right now. I think they are asking $25,000 for it which is pretty reasonable. I was told it cleaned up at the autocross events that it was entered in.

Is anyone here a wiz with Photoshop? I would like to see what the car would look like in pearl yellow or candy apple red.

I may have a line on a 3.0 SC motor for you. I think it needs some work though.

Just an update for the group. I purchased a J-Spec 3S-GTE engine for the 914. This is the engine out of the MR2 Turbo and Celica AWD Turbo. I can get adapter plates for this motor to adapt it to my 915 tranny and think that 350 hp is within reach with a turbo upgrade and installation of my Haltech E6K.

Anyone here with MR2 Turbo experience with turbo advice/tips?

What class is the car being built for? Is that a unibody 914, or a tube frame wearing 914 fibreglas? Looking good so far, that toyota motor should give it some good power without being too heavy.

I was actually thinking about this project the other day and was wondering how the progress was going. Which gen 3sgte is it? the second gen being 225hp afm with a ct26 turbo while the 245hp uses a map sensor and a ct20b turbo. Basically the easiest way to extract power out of the 3sgte is to upgrade the turbo and go with a standalone system like you're using. Also make sure that you either bore out or replace the fuel rail as it can cause detonation problems in the #3 and 4 cylinders during higher hp applications. Don't mess around with platinum or iridium pugs go with coppers and get yourself a bigger more efficient intercooler. With the right tuning the 3sgte can handle +20psi and over 550whp on stock internals. For the type of racing you plan on doing the best turbo for you would be some sort of t3/t4 setup or the garrett gt25 which is extremely popular with mr2 autocross enthusiasts...go to www.extremeboost.com they are out of Toronto and cater to the mr2 turbo. Good luck

Redlyne: Thanks for the info. My engine is a CT26 version (Gen II I think) and not the CT20b. What do you think about the TD06SH 20G for a turbo upgrade?

Soloracer...how could I forget about the td06, a fantastic turbo for the hp goals that you have. By 3200rpm the turbo is fully spooled and will last well past 7500rpm. Only one word of caution, the internal wastegate that comes with that turbo is garbage and leads to mad boost creep, get yourself I nice external tial.

In solo competition I would have to run in the modified group. When I move up to wheel to wheel competition I believe I would be placed in the GT-S catagory. However, I really don't care what I'm classed as. I just want seat time and to enjoy the track experience.

The car is a unibody 914 - not a tube frame - and is wearing some serious fibreglass.

Probably won't be seeing it at all this coming summer. I have a few other toys to get running first and even if I focused completely on the 914 I think there is too much to do to get it up and running. Hopefully you will see it on the road in 2004 - although my friends have a bet that it will be turned into a hot tub before it ever sees the track. :)

Well if you had asked me a month ago I would have said hot tub, but now that there is a motor in the garage I am a little more optimistic:D

Now you need to get an engine stand and start ripping it apart.
