My Grandpa is moving to Canmore and his olds Aurora is too big to fit in the garage along side their jeep. He wants something a bit on the luxury side with AWD (they live on the side of a mountain) that is small and reliable. I think $40k would be tops for him as far as price goes. He also does not mind a slightly used one with lower kms on it.

What do you guys think?

I am leaning towards the G35X for reliability, power, and size.

Edit:

What is the smallest trim of BMW that comes with AWD?

Does your Grand pa really need 260 hp ?

I think both G35X and 325Xi will be over $40k, an Audi 1.8 will fit $40K mark, however .. it is an Audi .... may not really fit the "reliability" area, and it is a Turbo engine ...

Best is, if you can find a 1 or 2 yr old 325Xi, 191 HP is enough for most case. And it is always "safe" to get a 3 series.

What about a 4Matic Benz? Those are luxury (and 4WD?) right?

Looks like grandpa has to buy a used one cause I don't think you can get any of the above cars for $40K out the door unless he wants a brand new Subaru :D

Yeah thats why I am saying used because he does not want to spend that kinda dough. I am trying to get him away from the A4 because of the turboed engine.

And he defenitaly does not need 260hp....not even a consideration. But, if the right deal comes along I am sure he would take it.

As for the Benz, I am sure those are a bit more cash than the BMW or G35.....not really sure but I will check it out. Also, I guess he is a bit scared away from Mercedez being high up on the list of problem vehicles. :dunno:

Thanks guys....keep em comin. :)

if you dont want your grandpa driving a 260hp car, i would say stay away from the g35x as well

There is the Audi A4 Quattro 2.8, which has the V6 and in the neighborhood of 190hp.

A used G35x may be harder to find because it is so new.

Has he considered some of the "mini" SUVs? Like a 4wd Toyota RAV4. I know it's no Audi or BMW, but he could probably get one new, and Toyota is the pinnacle of quality and reliability. Or perhaps a loaded Honda CRV. These are more car than sport-ute, and are probably smaller than his Olds Aurora.

The Audi is a great choice for an older person in my opinion, and you don't have to get the turbo.

Yes ! that is a very good choice too ! but I did look at the price / spec for the 2005 Legacy GT limited, Still $45K plus ! however, if your grand pa doesn't need the Limited edition, ( I dont know the diff ) he can still get a GT for just over $40K .. :)

What about size wize for the Subbie fellas?

I am thinking (without looking at the actual specs) that the bimmer is the smallest followed by the A4. I have not really seen to many of the legacys yet so I am not sure about those.

size wise i think its about the size of a bmw (legnth). inside it should be able to accomadate a fairly large individual with ease and comfort.

The 2005 Volvo S40 T5 AWD will be under 40 grand. It arrives in dealerships this summer.

The A4 actually has quite a wide track and may not give much more room than his aurora in the garage....

haha, wagons are getting popular again...

V50 or GT limited... I be looking seriously when the incentives start.
