I'm currently on Shaw Extreme....to be honest you won't notice a difference with normal web browsing, the biggest difference comes in your downloads, I run 4 torrents with uploads of 50+K each and still ping 100-150 in CS on a local server. So the bandwidth is larger. I run 4 PC's off the same connection and still get awsome ping. The cost is $10 more/month if you have shaw high speed with shaw cable tv. If you're just running shaw high speed internet it is $15 more/month. You also need to upgrade into one of the new DOCSIS modems, you can purchase one for $60 or shaw will upgrade your current modem for $25.

Some inside info for you guys, because the modems are so new shaw currently is unable to track the bandwidth on these modems, so download all you want no nasty e-mail/phone call regarding downloading too much stuff!

Hope this helps.

If you dont need the speed RIGHT NOW. Just be patient as Shaw is going to be converting over EVERYONE to DOCSIS 2.0 and will be shutting down the old network.

DOCSIS 2.0 is much more scaleable and this is a direction Shaw is going anyways. They are just charging people more who want to get on it right now.

I have spoken with a number of friends of mine with Shaw and they all recommend just hanging onto the current modem for as long as possible. As more people are moved to DOCSIS 2.0 the current network will get more and more empty... and eventually there will be barely anyone on it and you will have full run of it with TONS of available bandwidth.

XTREME for now will only useful for the BitTorrent addicts. For average everyday users it is a waste for money.

hmmm i thought shaw was upgrading peoples modems to docsis ones for free.

sputnik

They are. However if you want it NOW you have to pay for it.

Eventually everyone will probably be the same as XTREME is now, and the people paying extra will get increased bandwidth or a $10 "discount".

Any idea when the new system is going to be fully implemented?

Funny approach by shaw, DOCSIS 1.1 is easily capable of these speeds, shaw has just put rate limits on uploads...so the hardware really isnt neccesarry, the just wont uncap you unless you help them cut costs switching networks.

the DOCSIS 2.0 modems allow them to better scale in neighbourhoods so they can decrease the number of POPs they need.

Its not just a speed thing. Its a matter or architecture.

Right, but Im saying this hardware change is not necessary for the end user to be capable of these speeds, it is just in shaws best interest, to optimize their own network.

Pretty neat esp when you get to play at the telcom hub ;)

The main thing with 1.1 is it still costly with multiplexing performance and upstream takes a big hit.

DOCSIS 2.0 seems more effcient and with less upstream ports at the termination station. My Guess is Shaw prob wants to tap into the VOIP.
(The upgrade itself is not that costly compared to stream lining the current architecture - in the end it's all about $/bit)

Note: It's all relative in the end since your only going to see a burstable connection. :banghead:

That would be awesome. It makes perfect sense since they are almost everywhere in Canada already.

Much better alternative to the Primus VOIP.

Shaw has been getting into the VOIP market for over a year now. Hell, look at your set top boxes. nice IP modem data port on the back of them all :)

From a reliable contact at Shaw...

Shaw will be unveiling its VOIP service this year around Aug-Sept. It still has yet to be named, but it being heavily tested right now.

The pricing will be competive to Primus:

$20/month - Standard service with 3 numbers (different area codes available)
$40/month - Full service which includes unlimited LD to Canada/US

im positive that the docsis 2 modems are a strait trade for your normal modem. the are just taking the old one and giving out the new one. no cost (at least in edmonton).

Doomsday88
06-03-2004, 02:32 AM
if you read my post from above, currently DOCSIS modems aren't able to be bandwidth tracked....so they really don't know how much bandwidth you are using if you're on a DOCSIS modem. So...unlimited! Torrent as much as you can, while you can! don't beleive me, get a DOCSIS modem and then log into the secure site and check your bandwidth usage for the month, it will read 0.

JAYMEZ

ya not bad at all , its way faster.

GoChris
06-06-2004, 08:58 PM
i paid nothing for install, got my modem switched for free.
it maxes out at the 5Mbps they say almost all the time. downloading well over 100GB a month and no one complaining yet. upload is fast but dont use it, get the full 1Mbps upload they claim only when not downloading. when downloading upload is slower.

pretty good for $15/month extra for those that hate to wait.

JAYMEZ
06-06-2004, 11:22 PM
Its not gonna come into other ppls houses for a while , so if you dont want to wait , get it now :D

those are fast d/l and u/l speeds now but what will happen when everyone converts, how much do you think these speeds will slow?

JAYMEZ
06-07-2004, 08:58 AM
The guy said it really wont slow down, something about the new program and wireing? i dunno , im not a comp guy.

RiCE-DaDDy

Hah , what you think Silver? i tested the speed on www.download.com . damn its fast lol

Xtrema
06-09-2004, 02:07 PM
Doomsday's theory is confirmed.

Just DOCSIS'ed 2 days ago for EXTREME. Been Bit Torrented for the last 2 days at a minimum of 15-20GB/day. No show on the secure modem tracking site.

But that doesn't mean it won't show up on their internal tracker. Can someone work for Shaw confirm this?

Also, Extreme suppose to raise the bandwidth limit to 50GB from 30GB for the extra $10/month. And the swap is free, I brought in my old beige brick and did an direct exchange for a new DOCSIS modem.

Speed increase? Some but not dramatic. Downloading @ 500KB/s VS 345KB/s on the old system, so bandwidth did increase a bit. Access time seems faster but I don't have anything to measure.

I did the upgrade simply to get Shaw off my back because of my 50+GB usage each month.
