CL - 1.8 L
GL - 2.0 L
GTI - 2.0 L
GTI - VR6
If you have the money, go with the VR6, but if you want to buy a cheaper one and put money into it over time, get either a GL or a 2.0L GTI, and then turbo or supercharge it down the road. MK3 golfs are sweet, there are a lot of aftermarket parts for them, and Concept1 is the perfect place to get them, because they can get you almost anything. If you have any questions about them PM me, Im pretty knowledgable about them.

If you want power DO NOT get anything other than the VR6. If you want a fun little 'peppy' car get the GTi 2.0L. But performance wise, it is a money pit. Definately go for the VR6. The price of them on the used market has come down now and there are some giveaways on VR6's. Think of it this way, spend around $3000 more for the purchase of the VR6 over the 2.0L and save on future performance upgrades. The Neuspeed charger is the cheapest SC out there and sucks big time. After $4000-$5000 you are still par with a VR6.

STAY AWAY from the 1.8L engine (in the MKIII). Probably VWs worst manufacture to date!!

well its not fast but if you want fast go buy a camaro. no they are very realiable i have never needed to fix and thing in the engine, you just need to take care of it.

no MK3 GTI's came with 1.8's as far as I remember. however the 1.8L in the MK2s is often accepted as an extremely reliable motor from many mechanics and other auto manufacturers.

MK3 VR6 GTI's still go for 10k and up in Calgary.

the 2.0L is stupid slow, but Neuspeed makes a nice charger for it for an extra 55hp.

the uber base base golf came with a 1.8 me thinks

Yes the early MKIII (93-96??) came with the 1.8Digifant base engine and then the GTi 2.0 and VR6. I don't think any GTi came with 1.8. I've driven one and they are VERY slow. The MKII had the same engine but they are lighter. I was very dissapointed at the performance of the 1.8 in the MKIII. And Digifant cannot be boosted without having to change the whole CPU and fuel system. So basically all you can do is chip it.

I owned an MKII 1.8 and it was much better than the MKIII. I don't know the exact differences(headers, I think cam,...), but I also think the MKIII 1.8 are rated lower in HP than MKII(you can certainly feel it).

And yes they are reliable but so is the 2.0. I would go with the 2.0 anyday. I've also driven one of those and they have some good power, mostly torque despite their bad rep. But stay away from the 1.8. You'll be glad you did. The 2.0 can be just as reliable. If you want the 1.8 get a late MKII GTI(90-92).

Check out canadatrader.com for VR6 market prices right now.

no offence dude, but your price is kinda steep for that dub. If you have to sell it take off the wheels and sell them seperately.

There were definitely no MK3 GTI 1.8's, and the 1.8l in the CL was not digifant, they used a system called mono-motronic. A bastard setup at best.

Doesnt matter, there was no such car built. If you ask anyone in the US about a 1.8L MK3 they will think you're crazy, cuz they didnt even get CL's down there, but they have all the GTI's. Im just going to assume that either it was a 2.0L or he just wanted to make a CL into a GTI, but without changing the engine.
