View Full Version : 2000 Audi S4 vs. 2004 Subaru WRX STI Prodrive

It looks like I am going to buy either a 2000 S4 or a WRX STI UK SPEC Prodrive.

For about 50% more money, the WRX has a ton more power, bigger wheels, bigger (brembo) brakes and more aggressive suspension (probably better handling, but I haven't been able to test them at their limits).

On the other hand, the Audi is classier (doesn't look like a rice rocket), more comfortable and much lower key (less police harassment).

What do you guys think? Play it safe with a great Audi (only 24k miles) which has a bunch of tuning potential, or grab the Prodrive WRX?

BTW, the cars are for a small island in the UK with narrow roads with tons of twistys and no speed limit (the roads are literally a world famous racetrack).

An client of mine, even he had deposite on a 2004 Audi S4, but after he drove an 2004 STi, he bought the STi ! and he told me the STi is even faster, better handling and more Fun !

I tried the S4 2.7 turbo and the STi few times, honestly, STi is way nicer car, however, Audi is more classier as you said, but I am sure lots of Audi in UK ( you r in UK now ? )

The Prodrive is awesome ! and same 300hp too, all the review is positive !

However, I know that the 2.5L STi will sell in UK as well, with 350HP ( that area ) :dunno:

The EVO FQ-330 is insant too !

I'm going to be spending lots of time in the UK (I'm here right now actually) so I need a car here.

The car is a 2004 Subaru WRX STI UK Spec ProDrive. Apparently it is quite a bit faster than the standard STI (0-60 in 4.6 vs. 0-60 in 5.2 and the 0-160mph and quarter miles are substantially faster).

The 19" wheels and Brembos are pretty sick.. but I can't get over the looks.

And our STi here is 2.5L , their is 2.0 L, but same HP ! sigh .. :dunno:

Go for the STi !

I love the fit and finish of the S4, but for pure power off the bat, yeah, cant beat the STI. I dont see you as an STI driver, but hey, people change.

sti is more raw performance.. s4 has more luxury to it. very different cars. depends on what your looking for.

STI is like a racecar for the street, kinda like a faster Type R but with AWD. The S4 is a typical fast touring car with AWD. I'd definately go for the STI if you're looking to have waaayyy to much fun on a road. I'd definately try to get that thing sideways at least once a day.

What are you doing over in the UK?

You MUST be referring to the isle of man!! wow! i saw them test a E46 M3 CSL on Top Gear there, AMAZING! GO for the CSL!! or STi i good too, i guess...haha

Yeah, I'm in the Isle of Man right now (in fact the TT Races are going on right now.. basically the craziest motorcycle races ever.. already 5 people have died this year). I moved one of my companies out here for tax and regulatory reasons so I am now living out here most of the time.

I think I am going to go pick up the S4 today. I really like the new look of the STI (the headlights are much more conservative) but it is a bit much still.. and my girlfriend doesn't like it.

I think I am going to mildly tune the S4 (suspension, brakes and some power upgrades, maybe targeting about 350bhp).

As for the M3 CSL test drive -- I literally did a test drive of a new E46 M3 6 speed, then an E46 M3 SMG then an E46 M3 CSL along the same route.. the dealership here provided the car and technical assistance to Top Gear while they were out here (difference of course is that they were running on closed roads and can drive a hell of a lot better than I can, but the dealer that took me out was one hell of a driver)

Hmm.. maybe I should grab an E46M3.

I cant believe I would be the first to suggest a RS4? You may not like the Wagon(Avant), but it comes with 18" wheels, 14" Brakes, Wide Body (compared to S4) and best of all 350hp. It is a tuned version of the S4 engine.
Nothing quite like a Wagon that can embarass supercars....

Isle of man is INSANE!!!
those guys ride to die... keep in mind this is not a track, so when these guys crash, they crash into houses or rock walls or off cliffs.

But hey... if i had the chance to ride in it, i would.

Oh... and S4 without question, they STI has no class and is not good for everyday driving.

E36M3
06-04-2004, 10:07 AM
It is insane.. I actually live on the course, so there is a possibility of someone hitting my (rock) fence and then flying into the yard (happens all the time).

Five dead already, only one of them racing :) Guess a bunch of bikers were doing the course before the race begun (the course is open roads) and 4 different people bit it.

As for the RS4, it is a great idea, but I think it would be more fun to get an S4 and bring it to RS4 or better spec.

ie. 350+ hp, 18/19" BBS rims, great suspension setup, big brakes, intercooler, etc.

Talking numbers cannot explain the difference in the two cars. I drove them both in the past few months as I was searching for a car. Drive them both. My bet - You'll take the S4 - I did.

If you REALLY need to have the fastest car ever, go ahead and throw some APR staged upgrades. You'll be smoking the STi's and still save mucho deneiro.

After I bought mine, I realized I didn't need to be the fastest car on the street...not when I can spend less and ride in luxury. A friend of mine bought an STi. He likes it, his girlfriend wanted a ride in mine though...so, you be the judge.

I went with the S4, and really enjoy it. To be honest, I can't believe it was even a contest.. I am really way too conservative for a Subaru (or maybe too old).

The interior is just a quantum leap ahead and I really like the idea of a refined car that has the handling and speed of the S4. It is almost as fast as an M3 out of the box, and only one step below in the handling/braking department, but way more refined.

It makes a great car to share with my girlfriend.

This isn't what happend the last time I raced a B5 S4 with my STI :nut:

It takes more than a "few mods" to make over 400 reliable WHP on pump gas.....I know because I've done it.

Both are great cars :)

buy the s4, and with the money you save invest in a stage 3 kit, and then u will have around 500 hp and a car that will do a sub 4 second 0-60 and around an 11-12 second 1/4 mile!

there is no way the sti could compare to a stage 3 audi s4

Guys ---- I love Audi's and I am a huge B5 S4 fan. More than five years ago Tunerworks built what was probably the first K04-powered S4 in the city as a shop car so I know what this is all about.

You will be hard pressed to hit 11's without any major changes to the car... Jordan has the programming quite agressive.

Possibly if you had a C16 +Meth program done you would be closer....and added a slew of RS4 intake parts.. which arent exactly cheap.
