View Full Version : New Car Decision Help Needed..

Hi :)

I just got $20,000 to buy a new car.. and am having troubles deciding which to get. I am looking for what most people look for, reliability, moderate comfort, and speed :)

Some cars I have been considering:

VERY HEAVILY leaning towards 1985-1992 VW Golf GTI.. $20K can get you one of these done up to the max, vr6 engine, lots of mods, etc.. (Im not a ricer, trust me it would be done tastefully, lol) Are there any reliability problems with this one? it is an old car, which makes me hesitant..

Honda Civic: Yeah yeah its the most common car out there, but I absolutely LOVE the look of JDM civics, is $20k enough to make it look nice, and not rice? Also I'd want engine mods as they are uber slow.. Not sure of the years of this one, but prolly a 95-99 or so..

Integra: 95 or so.. can look real nice, again love the JDM look..

240SX: How much is a (S13 I thik it is.?) conversion? damn those look nice, and very unique..

Any other suggestions? I have $20,000 to include cars, mods, everything..

Thanks in Advance

He said reliability...and unless you are on top of everything in your DSM, the 2G DSM, would be an iffy choice...

But as Finboy stated a RWD car with lots of juice...a MK III Supra man...blast to drive and very lil needed to make good power and handling...

What about an older BMW.... 3 series... or even a 5 series would be pimp... not sure if you can get into a 5 series (decent one I mean) for 20K tho... :dunno:

just an idea... Old skool bimmers are soo pimp IMO... even stock.

If you do get an E30, get a 325is, 89-91 is the more saught after, those ones don't have the chrome bumpers like in the pic, they are the plastic colour coded ones. The taillights were a little different as well, and the "e" was no longer availible, just as well, the "i" was more a fun drive anyways. 2.5 litre, with around 160 hp. and 170ish torque. Buy one of these, and let Tunerworks go nuts on it, and you have one amazing little machine. Do the M50 OBD1 swap, (Get a 1994 M3 engine) And now your car hauls some serious ass.

They are a blast to drive, and a big market for them to do what you like to them, from body kits, to the internals. That would be my choice. Not a bad way to spend 20 g's.

Ah ok, see thats also an E30, an E30 M3, ('84-'91)and depending on shape, they go for around your price range! They have an S14 engine in them, just a 4 banger, nothing special, but a BLAST to drive.

More info on the at www.S14.net

Great car, good choice man, if you can score one of those. Your set.

First one (red with carbon hood) belongs to a guy Jeremy I know, really nice car, the second one, (blue with Reiger kit) belongs to a Randy Sparre, the car is stolen now, but had an M3 engine in it, along with about $40,000 other mods invested. Both haul ass. I would seriously consider these cars.

Both of these people can be contacted at www.maxbimmer.com if you need to ask them any questions about these cars.

I would definately love to have a clean S14 with an SR20DET engine. You can get an S14 for less than 10k, and have the SR20 in there for about 5k. An absolutely beautiful car and so much power and potential.

You could also get something done up much like the one that used to be EK9MAX's car for 20k. I don't necessarily mean performance wise, but look wise, definately. Same with the integra.

Personally, I would take the first choice. Buying a 15 year old Golf and dumping 18k into it is downright stupid IMO. I would even opt to get an S13 240 and the SR20DET, and you could probably keep 10k and use it towards school (or else you probably won't see another 20k for a long long time ;))

Also with the E30's, same rim size as the Civics, and bolt pattern too. 4x100.. So its easy to get rims for these things too.

s14's stock are ugly IMO.. maybe I'm just weird..lol

I wouldnt' spend $20,000 on such an old VW. You could get a decently modded '99 for that price.

I think Fluidic Digital's old Jetta is still for sale at Stampede Auto Sales. I'm sure you could work out a deal with them as it sat on their lot for such a long time. I'm not sure if that's the right dealership though so you might want to PM Fluidic and check.

Cheers.

how would you guys compare a 1999 Jetta/Golf 1.8T to a 1995 e36 m3? performance/reliability wise..

How would I compare them? I wouldn't. Those are just totally different rides all together man. Seriously.

TalonVelocity

yes, I know they are. anyway, after much deliberation (damn it must seem like Im goin all over the place, but trust me I've talked to lots of people) I have narrowed it down to 3:

99 Volkswagen Golf/Jetta 1.8T (stock)
90 Nissan 300zx TT (quite moded, 400+HP)
95 e36 328is (stock)

Does anyone have opinions on why or why not for any of these 3, thanks again.

first off, how do you just get 20 grand to buy a car, and where can i get 20 grand to buy a car. secondly, thats one pimp jetta, and it probably wont take up the whole 20Gs. plus with gas prices it would be alot easier to fill up for 70 cents intead of 90. i've been looking for a TDi like that but they are really hard to find in good shape.

Lennon
06-07-2004, 05:04 PM
Get the Zed, have way more fun with it, its so much more of a car than the Veedub thats for sure, and I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say its more than an E36 as well. Even if its a 328is. You'd have most fun with the Zed, guarunteed, hands down.

Anther good note, It was owned by me father, never abused or driven hard. Has over 5G's worth of extra parts the come with it. Also comes with all stock parts, Like I said if you want a well taken care of car that was never winter driven and babied this car is for you. Also you can spend some of your cash and have some left over to spend on some nice interior bling bling :D

I'd go with the VW out of the list of 3. Not only is it easily modded but the running costs and maintenance will be much lower than the other two.

The Z would be lots of fun, but due to its age, it could be a money-pit in repair bills.

Just my 2 cents. :poosie:

If you want to meet up and take a look at my 1.8T so you can get a better idea of what it's like, let me know.

No where did it say he has 400 hp. Plus the car has stock turbos on it, so Im not sure how that makes 400hp.

Unless it has been dyno'd there is no way to prove hp.
