Boosted_TL it's ok that you find it funny. even my career counselor had a little laugh. I know it sounds stupid, but I want to be one since I think its fun. well, it's either this or a computer technician or technology.

Heres the process and the costs

1. Local kart racing 10k-30k a year
2. National karting 100k a year
3. Feeder series open wheel racing such as FBMW FRenault FMazda 300k - 500k a year
4. Toyota Atlantic 1m a year
5. Champ Car 3m a year

Then if you good when your in champ car maybe you will become 1 of like 10 people who actually are getting paid.

Want to make it to formula 1?

3. Becomes 1m a year (F3)
4. Becomes 3m a year (F3000)
5. Becomes 3-9m a year (F1)

Then if you are good you can get paid lots in F1.

Racing is all about the money. I only know the open wheel ladder though I heard the touring car stuff is better for the money making and easier to do. If you wanna start at step 1 lemme know I'll sell ya a good shifter kart ;) .

If you've got the natural talent... check out :

http://www.skipbarber.com/

Attend their race school and race series, and if you kick everyone's asses out there, you'll be picked up by scouts for CART teams and offered a contract. This is by far the best and easiest way to make it to the top IF you have the talent.

Now, if you have the $, you can buy your way to an F1 seat for about $3-6 million USD a year depending on the team. That's what the son of the Malaysian GP track owner did, ran a year and got made fun of for spinning out every race within 10 laps :). There are guys that are geniunly good, one of the F1 drivers paid his way into an F1 seat thru his parent's company, 3 years later, they offered him a paid contract because he was actually good.

If you're good, F1 will pick up rookies too. I think it was Jenson Button (or one of the other young guys) who only participated in only 18 races before stepping into an F1 car.

Knowing some rich folks would be nice too... they can help you pay for all of the above :).

Take your car to your local Solo2 events. Compete against the local talent and see how you do.

if you have doubts and not a winning/competitive spirit you'll never make it.

The likely hood of this happening is almost on par with having definatinve alien contact!!!!! Even if you do well in there pro series (not running in '04) you will need to step into a higher formula before you get into a champ car (ie: atlantic). On top of that you will definately need some big $$$behind you.

so if i need to be a race car driver, I need a lot of money to start. I also won't be making any money from racing?
