View Full Version : cars for this generation and later generations

I've been thinking, we have no really nice cars to call our own. our dads go off about all the classic muscles yet what do we have to preach to our kids about? "I HAD A UBER HONDA CIVIC! OMG SO FAST" all we can brag about is how good our gas mileage was but in the future when we tell that story to our kids, our "good mileage" cars will look like shit compared to what they will probably have.

I dunno it sorta disappoints me to see that nobody will give 2 shits about the 1980-2000ish cars when we are older.

and of course the "super" cars are nicer (vettes, porsches, vipers etc) but lets face it, they are super cars. there have ALWAYS been super cars around. back then the muscle cars were pretty common that almost anybody could own.

ah well, just sorta a vent i guess thx for listening heh

Yeh, but muscle cars were 300-350+hp for 3-4000USD, which is about 25-30kUSD now. We have the new GTO, the 300C Hemi... wait that's about it. Those are both below 40K, which still isn't that cheap anyway, and both are remakes of old muscle cars. How much are Skylines in Japan, where they are domestic and more common? How about Supras?

well when times change, so do cars.
I guess this is the generation where fuel efficiency (due to rising fuel prices), ecological standards (due to global warming, etc.), practicality (due to more cars = crowded roads) and convenience (family oriented genre) take precedence over horsepower.

it also depends on what you wanna brag about.
but hey, there are some nice cars out there from our generation.

and if by nice you mean fast, well, then there are still a few out there.

I think the turbo toyotas or the early 90s are going to be pretty saught after in a few decades.

I think in 20 years there will be a huge following of civic owners - all the ones who bombed around in their modded cars with fart can mufflers - it won't matter that they weren't powerful or luxurious. I'll always remember my 2 favourite cars - my Cirrus and my Cruiser. The Cirrus because the owners group is really close knit and all the mods were DIY so it was a cool bunch to chat with and a cool vehicle to work with. My cruiser because its so fun to drive and the styling makes it unique. 80-00's sure there wasn't a label that would apply to all the cars made in those years, but 20 years from now, people will like what they like and that's alright too :D

Porsche's and MB's from the 80's and 90's are some to remember:

Mercedes: AMG hammer, 450 Sel 6.9, C36 first factory sold AMG car, 500E, CL65 AMG

Porsche: 959, 911 turbo, turbo cabrio, 944 series, etc

What about the corrado G60 and Vr6, Gti 16V etc....

These cars are from our era and have a lot of pros and cons like the muscle cars of our fathers era....but that also depends on where you are from, the cars of MY dad's era are the alfa romeos, mini coopers, BMW 2002Tii's etc....way cooler IMO than ugly muscle mullet mobiles....

I agree. I don't think it matters so much what kinda car it is. If you've ever seen your parents crawl under the car to do an oil change, tinker under the hood, hand wash their vehicle to perfection, there is a certain respect and appreciation that will be passed on to kids even without saying a word...

Being raised around domestic vehicles all my life (until recently when the parents ventured into a toyota dealership and walked out with a 4Runner).. It was only natural that being interested in cars, I'd find happiness in a muscle car... I can't explain it. But to each their own...

I've also thought those exact same thoughts myself, what in the hell am I going to tell my kids about..... and a car that I like to talk about... not much really, but the BMW E30's, (I've owned 2) and my Z31 are a couple of the few I wouldn't mind bragin about to my kids.

I'm definatly going to talk up a storm of the DMC-12 though, love that car to death.

But even after all those, I'm still left with no car that I really liked that was from my own damn continent. Everything I like, is from overseas. Which I guess I don't mind as much my background being European, but still... I dunno.

As far as North American cars from the late '70's up... just plain sucked poop.

Now adays the world is full of some of the most amazing cars ever built. Too bad none of them are available in Canada. I find it funny how an American company like Ford builds better cars for the European market then they do for their own country. Or new affordable cars like the Vauxhall VX220. Amazing machine. Not available here.

I always laugh at the Top Gear episodes i download and how they always make fun of american cars. I laugh because it's true. At the same time it makes me want to cry lol.

Ahhh...all the cheap , everyday cars that parents buy their kids as a first car... :D
Very few people drive AMG mercs, Porsches etc...

I reckon early 1980's ,unmolested , Stangs, Firebirds/Camaros,VW Rabbits/GTI's , Civics , Magic Wagons(!) ,K-cars ,Caprices ,Cavaliers/Sunbirds, Small Blazers , Bronco 2's , Rangers, Escorts.

Basically ,the mass-produced cars that everyone grew up with.

Good topic ...

late 80's early-mid 90's nissans are some of my favorite cars ever, something about them attracts me more than a new car?
Probably why I've owned 4.

Understanding that these are not first cars or cars that all people grew up on but the thread was about which cars from that era will be remembered. Those are some favorites that I will remember...

Some people DID grow up with those exact cars btw ;)

yep i watched it and that was the episode i was thinking of. He bashes american cars whenever he gets a chance. Of course it's mostly for humor, but what he says about cars is generally true. I mean, i dont think the Americans could invision a car like the Lotus Elise if their life depended on it. And IMO that is what i want in a car. SUVs can burn in hell.

best part of the last Top Gear episode is when they talk about cars that should, or should not be sold in Britain;

Clarkson talking about the new Pontiac Solstice.

*asks audience member* "You like it"
*crowd* "Yea, looks like a TVR.

"Exactly, it looks good because it looks European...
The difference is, it has a 2.4L engine from which the American's have managed to extract 170bhp! *crowd laughs* 170bhp! we dont want that! no way!"

Then he goes on to make fun of the Pontiac Aztec which has a 3.4L engine and only 185bhp

RX7 will be a classic car, sought out (maybe) in the future.

Same with Supra TT's?

I don't think there will be any civics left in 30 years by how quickly they seem to rust :)

Hahaha, I think I might have a cardboard box with wheels here that you'll really like!

I think too many of these cars are niche market vehicles, like the GTI, few people know what a GTI is, everyone knows or has heard of a GTO is though. AMG is just MB to the average joe, but the average joe knows a classic mustang when they see one (thanks to Gone in Sixty Seconds). Instead of being known for cars I think our generation will be known for what we did to our cars, both good and bad.

The cars that people had in their youth are what middle aged men seek out later in life.

Nice Hondas will be a real find in 2025. Few will survive. Modificatiions, accidents, abuse and rust will claim almost all of them by then.
At one time muscle cars were like bic lighters - common and cheap. Mustangs were looked down upon. Cars like Duster 340's and 350 camaros were commonplace, and generally regarded as crap compared to a Chevelle SS or a big block Mopar.

Earlier, there were millions of 55-56-57 Chev's around. Now they are almost as pricey as a house.

Seriously - what do YOU think a G3 Honda Prelude, or a 95 Eclipse be wirth in 20 years? How many will survive?

Perhaps - however I heard that being said 18 years ago about the 2.8 litre Fiero fastback GT. They were wrong.

I agree about the Nissan tho,
Now, what will a real Skyline be worth?

06-17-2004, 11:01 PM
i believe that in the future parents will be proud to talk about their honda they had when they were young. with the way the world is working we'll all be driving a toyota prius so anything that could go fast will be cool. And hondas will be really rare in the future, look at how many are around from the late 70's early 80's.

Some cars I will talk about are the Corvette ZR1 Trans Am GTA, Grand National, Monte Carlo SS, Mustang Cobra 5.0, VW GTI. And for those of you that learned most of your car knowledge from Fast N Furious and Top Gear, You guys gotta remember that you have to put a couple thousand dollars into most of your imports to make them as fast as American cars. Go to Race City on Friday and you will see 11,12 and 13 second American street cars and then you will see 15, 16 and 17 second Import cars with lots of mods .Damn, my 5000lb truck can pull a 17 on the quarter but I would be to embarressed to run anything slower than 15.

Who cares? The only country on earth that even cares about drag racing is America. The true test of a car is how fast it can lap a road course. That gives you a picture of the total balance of the car. The balance between power, handling, weight, etc. Any moron can strap a jet engine on a barn door and run fast in a straight line.. Woopdeedoo.

I think our problem here is we are looking at too big a time scale .
Are we talking about 80's cars or the latest cars ??
For example there's a big difference between the first RX-7's and the last version sold here.

Couple missed : Mazda Miata, BMW Z3, BMW M3 , Porsche Boxster, Omni GLH/GLHS

What about Luxo SUV's ?? How will they be looked in 20-30 years ?? Thoughts ??

My late nineties list will include Integras, Subaru RS' coupes, GTI VW's, Toyota Supras, Miatas, RX7's - I am sure that some cherished examples will survive, just like old COPO Camaros and Boss 302 Mustangs did three decades ago.

Most Canadians don't know what a Skyline or even a GTO (new one ) is because they're not sold here yet . And I've read the GTO isn't selling well in the US. Too plain looking and expensive for a Cavalier on 'roids...

I've seen lots of the new 300 . I think they will be very popular..
