What is Links Golf?

Like the title says, they always make a big deal of how the Euro courses are "links" which is different from NA courses how?? (And how the US Open this year is more of a links course)

I do golf course construction and we're currently building a 'linksy' course in Delacour. In Calgary we can't have a true links course but to compensate we make it wide open (ie. no trees) with aggressive bunkers.
