Maybe it's time to start a tradition of breaking up the "Post yer Latest Picture" by months. The last thread had some really great photos. Let's keep 'em coming!

I'll start...

Something a bit different from my usual astrophotography. Trying different things with exposure time and dark subtraction. Taken about 2 nights ago:
http://photos.asianorgansurplus.com/night/dscn0808_clean.jpg

These were taken while I was rollerblading downtown:

http://photos.asianorgansurplus.com/rollerblading/cimg0013.jpg

http://photos.asianorgansurplus.com/rollerblading/cimg0014.jpg

Duck kept waddling away while I was trying to roll towards it :D

BTW, for those who didn't know, if you use the BIMG tags instead of the IMG tags, it'll automatically reduce the image size shown and add the "Click image for larger version" as shown above.

One of the better results from 3 nights ago. When the moon is close to the horizon, it appears sort of orangey/brownish color:

just curious to get those shots where the main subject is in focus but everything else is blurry how do you do that? i know the portrait mode on the auto settings does that but how do you do it manually?

benyl
07-02-2004, 09:10 AM
it is all about depth of field.

Shallow depth of field = large aperture (lower number like 2.8)
deep depth of field = small aperture (everything in focus from close to far)

Man, taking pics of fireworks is hard. Especially with digital!

I tried using the night guide which suggested

1 second, f22 and 400 ISO... None of the photos I took using that looked good.

Melinda
07-02-2004, 10:18 AM
I used my tripod and a shutter release cord set on 'bulb' so I could control how long the shutter was open. It was at f16 or so, I played with it a bunch throughout the show

Really? I find taking photos of fireworks far easier than with regular film because you can preview, as well as ISO noise on our cameras is almost non existant till 1600.

I wish I was close and Had a tripod, but I wasn't, so handholding the cam was my only option with my crappy kit lens, hahaha

It was along the Trans Canada, across from the limestone quary east of Canmore.
Earlier that day, we spent 5 hours hiking for a lost ski and pole that a buddy lost in an avalanche while backcountry skiing. We found it, suprisingly.

Very mininally (is that a word?).

The camera does not always capture what the photographer sees with their eyes, so tweeking is often required.

I took this picture in the big storm we had a few weeks ago. This is 'un-modified'. It was pitch black outside, and ofcourse I couldn't react fast enough to catch the lightning at will. But this was one picture that actually was captured...

Nice lightning shot! Here's mine from July 2nd. There was still quite a bit of light out, so I had to take continuous quick exposure shots to get this one. Dumbass me left the monitor on, so you can see the reflection! :banghead:

Kinda pathetic looking, but after taking 600-700 quick exposure shots over a period of two days, atleast I got one.

I took about 100 shots in about 10 minutes. I got a few others as well. But this one was the neatest for the way the lightning was looking.

The ones that didn't work are just 'black' because it was so dark out. It was night...I've got a couple pictures where I must have 'missed' the lightning, but all the houses are lit up like it is daytime! (Just looks foggy!) Anyhow...

I was shooting out my back door, so no window/rain in my way. There must be a better way to take pictures of lightning. I've never tried before. This stuff was just so close to us, it was wild.

Nice pictures guys.

Now, since there are a couple pictures of animals up now... here are a couple from when the Baby Polar Bears were here in Calgary!

Well, depends on what software you have I guess.

That's a low-res picture we're talking about, and it's nasty compression too. So bottom line is it's not fussy on how it's done. I did it in about 10 seconds - just used clone brush in Photoshop.

1badPT
07-14-2004, 06:53 PM
If I wanted to print that picture from the original hi res, would the clone brush be obvious in the print? Or is there a "print friendly" way of doing it?

Thanks for the edit btw :D

Depth of field...
a function of aperture, focal length i believe

even if your camera had manual features, you dont' get much effect without an slr.

Sure you can do it on the high-res and no one could tell. Just change the brush you are using to have a slightly softer edge. Soften the brush up until you can't see any weird things happening when cloning.... Bottom line, just be careful when you are cloning that's all.

If you do a good job, you can't tell at all on the print...

It's an aperture setting yes, but you also have to adjust for shutter speed so that you get the motion blur. If you keep the same shutter speed but close up the aperture, the photo will underexpose.

This is true, you get far better results from an SLR because you have 100% manual control over everything. ISO, Shutter Speed, Aperture, all that good stuff.
