Has anyone reading this ever purchased a car in the United States from Canada and had it shipped? I've just bought a car on eBay in Florida that I want to have in Calgary, and I need to arrange to have it shipped with duty, etc. all taken care of.. any tips?

Thanks.. I've gone through the process before, but was more looking at any tips on transport companies that can take care of the paperwork for you.

If you don't mind me asking, what car did you purchase?

There is a couple year waiting list in Calgary at the dealers, no real good options available that I could find in Canada used, and it was a steal.. it was also the color combination I wanted and had the right options.

cool cool...who did you end up going with for transport? my car was in bond in vancouver with Hansens, they were supposed to ship it originally, but their schedule with the holiday didn't work out, so it is being shipped by allied.

Is it going to be expensive for duty and costum fees.. And is it inspected already?

Yeah, it is fully inspected, under warranty, and is essentially brand new. I got about 150 pictures of it, and it is absolutely mint. With customs, duty, modifications and transportation, it is still about 60k or so cheaper than a new one in Canada.

I went with A-A Auto transport, which was significantly less expensive than most of the other people I spoke to, had a truck available right away, and were very friendly/professional.

I'll let you know what it looks like on the other end :)

From E bay ? wow .. I always wondering how reliable to buy those nice cars from Ebay, prices are so good, and too good to be truth ! I always scare to see "too low" price ... even Toronto or Van .. theor prices are way lower ..but I end up never buy a car out of Alberta ...

Any hints ? I want to buy a car from US ! way cheap now .. let us know what you need to do from you bought the car, till you get the Alberta insurance, Plate, and have the car on Calgary roads !

By the way, I talk to Benz, on AMG product, such as SL55, E55 ..etc, they don't allow people to sell them across the board for 2 yrs .. when the buyer picked up his car, in Canada or US, need to sign a letter, indicated that he cannot sell the car outside of US/Canada where he bought the car from, within 2 yrs .. ? :dunno: that is what I was told from Benz Dealers .. and they did show me the "letter" from Benz Canada .. :dunno: not sure how it works ! :dunno:

Did you ever get the car to visit that Florida place before getting it shipped up here? ;)

C4S brings up a good point. Although I didn't buy the SLK32, I had to sign the same waiver form.

I think E36M3 resides in San Fran so the car will probably be registered with Cali plates?:dunno:

He's in both calgary and cali. The car's coming to calgary (hence the thread shipping to canada) hehe.

I've got two Benzes that are less than two years old, the G500 and the SL55, and they did not require a waiver in either case. The only time I have ever heard of such a thing is people buying the vehicles in Canada, not the U.S. where exporting them is a lot more rare.

I highly doubt a waiver is enforceable, and in fact, I'm sure it is illegal under NAFTA regulations.

As for the cars being cheap, you definitely have to do your homework.. you can buy an abused car quite easily, so you should be careful, especially with a high performance vehicle.

The Florida place's website is broken, or else I would have it over there right now.

561-845-7888 give them a call ;). It SHOULD save you some money taking care of it down there as compared to doing it up in Calgary.

Trust me, it's well worth it :).

Car should be in and out within an hour if they have an open bay.

Thanks.. yeah, the S4 is in Europe and has a manual transmission (which I prefer, especially on the curvy roads in Europe and it rules when I'm in the no speed limit zones). The AWD is nice in the wet.

I'm split between Canada and Europe mostly, although I have a house in California which is where I am hoping to spend most of my time eventually (I've spent most of the last five years there)
