hi all,

like the look of the new tiburons, but worried because, well, its still a hyundai.

can this car hold its own, and with the right modding, be a nice ride? or is it forever doomed to be a faker?

your thoughts, please!

I rented one last week and I'll give u a brief overview of my thoughts. mine had about 46K kms and it sounded like it was starting to have problems. Rough idle etc etc. When u get into the car, first thing u find is that u feel like ur sitting in a bath tub, the windows are much smaller giving u very little area to see out of. I eventually even gave up shoulder checking and would just change lanes and hope to hell no one was there. I had the 4 cyl one and all performance about it sucked.. no power in the lower bands or upper bands when passing ppl on highway or in city had to floor it. suspension is very soft on the car lots of body roll luckly the car is lowered so it prevented me from flipping the thing, interior is relatively sparse and cheap, cheapest rubber used no mirror lights looks like they tried to copy stuff from everyone and failed. shifter looks like is was ripped off IS300 headlights and taillights off a cougar, etc etc. Sun roof was starting to make squealing and clicking noises when opening not smooth at all, shifttronic had troubles shifting to 4th gear in the end had to pull lever down a little then move up to shift.. If u do get one I'd suggest getting v6 and then turbo cuz that car simply does not have enough go.

Also they don't keep re-sale values.

I have a '97 Tib (the first year they came out) and have been very happy with it - its got almost 230,000 km now and has held up very well. The engine is still strong, and there's no rust (except for a poor repair job from a previous accident). I've had a few electrical problems, but that was common with the year I purchased and hasn't been an issue with the later cars. As far as the new ones go, if you are looking for performance plan on turboing the I4 - a lot of guys have gotten theirs as high as 250 hp and 200-225 is pretty easy. The new Tib uses the same engine as the old one, but is quite a bit heavier so the stock performance isn't too good. If you are getting the V6, there is a really good supercharger that can add 40 hp (to around 220). As for resale values, sure they are lower, but the purchase price is also a lot lower than a comparably equiped RSX or Celica. For the difference in price you could do some pretty heavy mods to the car and turn it into a rocket. As for build quality - well they just beat out Toyota and matched Honda, based on JD Power. The interior materials aren't quite as good, but remember the car is like $5,000 cheaper than its nearest import competition.

better than your VW and range rover... and
last i heard, benz dropped a few points on this scale. Yes i know, this this is only the 2003 results, but from what i read on the 2004 results , there roughly the same. Japanese cars takin top honours , then american...and all the eurpean cars dropped a few points on the list.
My friend owns a tib...he loves it. He hasn't had much trouble, only had to change the bearing on one of the rear wheels. and he drives the car like he stole it.

They are a little under powered but I think they look nice. And the Elantra and Accent are highly rated (but not race cars, obviously). I would not want to be sitting in the back seat of a Tib though.

And if you buy a car thinking about resale value, you can't afford the car. Either lease it, or finance it and keep it for 8-10 years and enjoy the time with no car payments.
