actually you're wrong

"Honda launched its Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (somehow reduced to `VTEC') in 1988, originally as a 1.6 litre four-cylinder in the CRX coupe (which arrived here in 1990). I know what you're thinking -- 1988 was the year Honda was unstoppable in Formula One, winning 15 out of 16 races. But the VTEC systems wasn't actually derived from F1 -- it was a development of a motorbike system, launched in 1983, called REV (which probably stands for Integrated Evolutionary Variable Motorcycle Engine Dynamics. Or something)."

you asked what vehicle, so in saying that it could be a motorbike. and the article that you have only talks about when the first appearance of the B16a engine.

Sorry, I meant to say Double Vanos, and I prefer because it offers full time variable valve timing, while the Vtec doesn't offer continual variable valve timing. Double Vanos is just a superior system, more expensive, but superior. The new three-step Vtec might compete, but the current one doesn't.

but if u are talking about ivtec, it is also an infinitely variable system like dvanos. apparently all acuras will be ivtec powered by the end of 2004...

cam phasing = spinning the camshaft around = variable
cam lobe profiles = having 2 different sets of lobes = on/off

vanos = cam phasing
ivtec = cam phasing + cam lobe profiles

im not saying which is better, but u should learn more about how an engine works!!

Heres how it works.

As a VTEC driver, you can both hear and feel the change when the VTEC "kicks in" at higher rpm levels to improve performance. While this system does not offer continuously variable valve timing, it can make the most of high rpm operation while still providing solid driveability at lower rpm levels. Honda is already working on a three-step VTEC system that will further improve performance and efficiency across the engine rpm range.

DOES NOT OFFER CONTINUAL VARIABLE VALVE TIMING

Heres how Vanos works.

But, as of 1999, BMW is offering its Double VANOS system on the new 3 Series. As you might have guessed, Double VANOS manipulates both the intake and exhaust camshafts to provide efficient operation at all rpms. This helps the new 328i, equipped with a 2.8-liter inline six, develop 193 peak horsepower and 206 pound-feet of torque. More impressive than the peak numbers, however, is the broad range of useable power that goes along with this system. Take it from someone who's driven the new 3 Series and who loves torquey engines-it works!

There is no such thing as a "new 3 stage VTEC".

The last time 3 stage VTEC came out was in the mid 90's in the EG Civic, and that was for fuel efficiency purposes only.
