What rear spoiler do you think I should put on my car?
Should I get a roof spoiler as well?

I like the ACS 3 piece or the M3 rear spoiler. Not a fan of the Hamman DTM at all.

And IMO, No to the roof spoiler. Its too much. I like the clean lines of the 3 series

Dunno if you can do this...

The first picture, looks like a spoiler on top of a spoiler. I like the top spoiler, minus the bottom one, minus the roof spoiler.

either that...or wingless looks pretty good to me.

I'd put the OEM on, but for that money I'd say go wingless, put your money into something else on the car.

Was that you I saw driving by SAIT?

Driving up the hill at like 2:15 or so today? Can't remember what time it was, just finished getting pictures taken on top of that hill, I saw a bimmer coming up, realized it had a body kit, looked in rear view and it was the same body kit you have, it looks really good.

It looks like none of those would do any good at all except give you some drag and limit rearward visibility. I vote no spoiling spoiler too.:burnout:

actually most people put a spoiler on for the looks. a street driven car will never be able to reach high enough speeds for a spoiler to do anything.

Mikko
11-09-2002, 11:19 PM
If the spoiler was mounted at the correct angle, you could get downforce at more modest speeds at the price of a fair bit of drag. Am I right?

And heh, yeah, I know how people put it on. It impresses those who don't know anything about cars. lol

then again, for a spoiler to work best, u need wing tunnel testing to figure out the best angle etc...

also, spoilers arent just for downforce, most of the time they are just meant to deflect air from getting sucked underneath the car (which causes turbulent lift)

go for the M3 spoiler .. I was having the same dilema with my civic .. i hate spoilers .. but it didnt look finished .. so I put on the M3 spoiler .. and hardly anyone notices it .. but now it looks complete ..
MY VOTE >>>>> M3

Yeah Jeff I know :-) That's the original intention for them if I am not mistaken. I read a bunch of technical stuff at the autozine technical school (very interesting) - autozine.kyuul.net

But of course, I don't think road cars are going to be generating a lot of lift.. lol.

Tell that to first year Audi TT owners. You can design a wing to generate downforce at any speed, unfortunately like everything else you are making comprimises. A really efficient wing at low speeds doesn't provide much downforce at high speeds, only lots of drag. 99% of the aftermarket wings are completely for looks and almost totally non-functional.

What about Factory Wings? I dont think my Car looks right at all without the Rear spoiler, but you COULD have got the car without it( If you Didnt purchase the "Sport Package") so If They Sold it without the Wing, then it couldnt be 100% Functional right?:dunno:

Mikko

Well.. sports package for many cars seem to be mostly larger rims and some cosmetical stuff.

I wonder how this evolutionized. When did the first spoilers appear on more everyday road cars? Were they big and functional at first? Or were they right away made smaller and less 'obscene' (often hear girls and some guys whine about how obscene large spoilers are, that they should be happy with a smaller one) - using the sporty image?

Anyone know the history? I think porsche was among the first to put them on their car to battle lift.

The first spoilers would have started appearing on street cars in the 50s, when the first of the bathtub porsches and similar performance oriented sports cars started appearing on the scene. and no, the first spoilers were not huge monstrosities, they were little duckbill things like you see on *GASP* NASCAR type cars (although nascar wouldn't start messing with aerodynamics seriously until the 70s.

I think I saw you on the streets, your rear spoiler looks a little higher than the regular stock WRX spoiler, did you customize it or something?

not must of a custom job.. just a zerosport carbon fiber rear wing adapter. figure its pretty cost effective to reuse my stock one.. those STI cf GT wings are too rich for my blood..

my friend also have a silver wrx with the same spoiler setup.. however he has the JUN eyelid and front lip spoiler...

we both live in the NW... not surprise if you spotted us.. :)
