All depends on the filter, mine are 2 aqua 500's and they humm along if the water level is nice and high. Once it drops a bit, you hear the sound of pouring water all night....lol. I'm sure there are quieter filters out there, but these were cheap.

Thats a cool looking tank Ben.. I want to get a tank going in my room (we have had fish numerous times and have several tanks at home i can use), but my mom says having a tank will "fuck up" the walls in some way.. wtf is she talking about? Will the walls somehow soak up water or something?? I want a tank dammit!

Ben
08-25-2004, 01:50 AM
Nah, you'd have to have a hot tub or sauna to screw the walls up. Fish tanks only increase the level of humidity in a room a few percentages. A rainy day is far worse for your home than a fish tank, haha

I used to have a couple fish but one night my brother got up in the middle of the night and swung his legs over the top of the bunk-bed and knocked the fish tank over. :guns:

They are not too bad, depends on what you want. I bought mine at Gold's for $7 each. Depends on where you go, stick to Ocean's or Gold's and you shouldn't have to pay too much for the more common fish and corals.

A word of caution though, stay away from Big Al's, they seriously tear a new hole in your ass!

I have a serious problem with my fish relocating the gravel in my 90 gallon tank. The big bastards can have 5-6" piled up in the front of the tank overnight. Its getting annoying.

I realize they are just trying to hide and make themselves deeper caves but no matter what size of caves I give them they always have to make it bigger.

Anyone have any suggestions? Im thinking of maybe switching substrates but Im getting tired of pushing the gravel around all the time. :dunno:

All they are doing is staking their territory. Take a stick, push the gravel back, it keeps them busy. Also, when you do your water changes, move the decorations around, confuse them into thinking they are somewhere different.....also good if they are getting agressive.

Chris88CL
10-28-2004, 03:55 PM
Yeah I usually end up moving the plants and stuff around more often then I change the water. Actually, its them that moves the stuff around. Live plants last maybe a week before they get torn apart and fake plants usually end up floating after a day or two.
One of these days Im just going to silicone the plants to the floor of the aquarium or to a big rock.

My fish are fairly aggressive but get along surprisingly well for the wierd combination. I have a 7-8" Red Oscar, a 1.5-2" Congo Puffer and a couple cichlids in my 90 gallon freshwater tank. Anything else I put in they usually eat fairly quickly (including pleco's, which sucks for algae control).

Its mainly the oscar that moves the gravel around. He's so big that he can displace ALOT of gravel in a short period of time.

Im actually taking a break from tearing down pretty much the entire tank right now. Its time for the fall cleaning and its taking FOREVER. It takes me like 4-5 hours.

Its definately not the prettiest tank or setup but it's decent for just a decoration in the TV room. I'll try to get pics up tonight if I ever finish cleaning it. I need to go pickup more rocks to make caves from.

How many other people here have cichlids? And what kind?

I have a 140 gallon mixed cichlid tank, with 30-40 fish ranging from electric yellows and blues, to 7 bar frontosias and clown loaches. Lots more that I dont know much about, other than the fact that they look awesome.

I used to live in a house with a water purification system similar to reverse osmosis but was done with uv, anyway, how do you take this crappy chlorine invested water and put it in to a fresh water tank with out hurting your fish. Do those "safe water" in 20 min things actually work? Anyone had any experience with it, I've lost a couple fish and it must be time for a change.

50 gallons = approximatly 415pounds of water + rocks, gravel, and the tank it's self, so will it fall through the floor? in a modern house, no, your bathtub is heavier. As long as your home has proper floor joists and supported cross members, you'll be fine.
