View Full Version : My story of my first ticket (in Calgary) and first Court Battle!!

Well I was pulled over one block from my house about a month ago. The Policeman proceeded to tell me that I ran the stop sign (4 way) and I was speeding in a playground zone.
Understanding a thing or two about police procedures, I took my turn and said..."Speeding??? What did you clock me at? May I see what you locked me in at on your gun?" (knowing full well most city police cars do not have radar inside) He then told me that he didn't use radar. I continued my questioning with ...."Well there was a subaru behind me, therefore you had to be behind that car or further. What landmark did you use to calculate my speed?"
With no reply to the questions at hand the constable continued to his car and only came back with one ticket!! Much to my surprise, a rolling stop or "failure to obey Stop sign" holds a tasty price tag of $287.00
Obviously with this being my first Ticket handed to me by a Police constable...... (In calgary ;) ) ..... I did not want my insurance to go up due to points on my license (as this fine carries 3 points) I wanted to fight it in court. Something else I have never done.
I am sitting in the endless line of people fighting fines and such, and not seeing very much positive outcome from the people leaving......it became my turn after a mere hour and a half wait. A wait that became worth every minute.
OUTCOME: Ticket went from $287.00 and 3 points due Aug 19th. To $150.00 no points and due oct 29th.
I concider myself Lucky!!

What ya can't read? Seeing as reading comprehension is not your strong point I will explain for you that it's just a story about my experience with a ticket and the outcome of my court hearing. PM me if you need more help with the situation.

reading comprehension eh, maybe you should go back and read what you wrote. you'd notice that you don't include how or why your fine was reduced. hope that helps.

Sorry man!! Maybe it's my story writing skills that need some help. But being the story writer I believe I wrote " I took it to court and my ticket went from $287 and 3 points to 150 no points and pay later (end of Oct)" When I went to court, you wait in a sea of people until a crown prosecutor calls you in a room for you to explain yuor story. He then decides if you deserve the reduction, tpoints reduction or nothing at all. Thats it thats all. Thats how my ticket got reduced.

As for Mr Benzo, I did not ask for Dr Phil to mediate my posts. Dont you have mortgages to sell?

I waited for my first ticket ever..I waited I believe 1 hr and 45 minutes. the Crown came out and looked at me. hes like "you've been here for a while, whats your name?"
"xxxxx xxxxx, Sir"
"oh no, we messed it up, we took the wrong person..we got your last name but we took the wrong first name. hold on a sec"
so then he took me into the office, "well you were very patient out there, I'll tell you what I'll drop this fine down to a 5km/h over and no points."

I was liek :D Thanks!
well worth it, from 2XX some dollars down to 45 or so. I was happy. Never again will I speed..

Sorry for not replying sooner.
This was my first experience doing this, as well as my first ticket in calgary. All I said was that I didn't think that having my first ticket should bring up my insurance rates. I told him I lived here for three years and this is the only ticket I have recieved. Thats all. Maybe it helped that I took my hat off when I entered his office, and the other office as well.

As far as what you do goes. Go in and wait in the line to speak to a "justice of the peace" They will ask you if you want to plead guilty and pay or speak to a Crown Prosecutor for advice and or reduction. If you choose to fight the ticket, you proceed to wait in the long line up of three or four rooms containing Crown Prosecutors. The one that gets your file will call you in. Explain yourself, and see the outcome. Dont be an idiot, and things should be ok. Again just like a cop it depends on their mood. Once a decision has been made, you wait one more time usually MUCH faster than the original wait. You then see A final CP and he / she signs off the new fine or maintains the original fine. I noticed some people were ordered to pay right away at the cashier. I was polite and asked if Paying in OCtober was ok. She than said how about Oct 29th? Of course I took it!!

Good Luck
