Honestly I don't have high hopes that any governing body will crack down on SUV owners. I'm glad that some SUV manufacturers have volunteered to make their vehicles more safe by lowering bumper heights, putting more powerful brakes on their vehicles, etc. Perhaps they are just getting a step ahead of the game in case the feds crack down on SUV manufacturers. This article raises some interesting points, but for the most part they are moot points since nothing is or will be done about it IMO.

He is simply stating that SUV owners are having their cake and eating it too.

What does he have to jealous about?

SUVs are a factor of why we enjoy high fuel prices. I will love it when gas is $1.50/litre and all the SUV owners cry because it costs them $150 to fill their tanks...

And the fact that American taxpayers PAY for those SUVs. The tax exemption for heavy trucks was meant for farmers buying farm equipment, not trendy real estate brokers driving around in a Hummer. I mean, how could you refuse if the government said "ok if you buy an Explorer or a car, you have to pay for it but if you buy something bigger, we'll pay for it". It's the tax laws (and what defines a truck) that are the problem in the States

Right and if they change the tax laws, then the farmers get screwed. It is kind of a lose lose situation.
