Those Germans looked sharp alright. Alot better than the tracksuit or the hoodie.

I disagree. You don't see the high medal count countries cheering on their athletes who finish 6th or 8th... countries like the US expect the best from their athletes and they get it.

What bothers me is a county like Australia comes in and wins a ton of medals, yet Canada does jack-all. It's not like Australia is some huge economic power with a huge population base to draw from, yet they manage to produce quite a few world class athletes. Why can't we do the same, for either the Summer or the Winter? (besides hockey of course)

We watched the girls win the medal while I was on my lunch break...not bad, they didnt have many who could have taken them out of third when the last round came around. They were in contention for silver but I think russia took that, bumping us to bronze. China took gold, but they did really well for it

well we are a winter powerhouse even outide of hockey, and we focus too much on that. our summer athletes just don't get the same respect, which hurts sponsorships and funding. australia is the opposite. it's like bizzaro canada :nut:

In fact, in Rand McNally, they wear hats on their feet and hamburgers eat people!

Yep, Canada is very small population wise but there are athletes who train for the summer and winter sports, so funding has to be divided between them. Just no enough money to go around to facilitate high class training throughout. I'm pretty sure in communist countries like the old USSR, China, or maybe Cuba, the athletes essentially live to train and compete.

oh i know, i was just posing a rhetorical question to express my distaste at how we are so quick to critisize the athletes who probably worked pretty damned hard to represent us. why should they care to keep training for the next olympics when they know that ppl are gonna hate them if they dont get medals?

I think Canada is sending somewhere between 250-275 athletes to Athens. The fewest Canada has sent to the summer olympics since 1984 or something like that.

08-17-2004, 11:16 AM
canada sent only 231 :(

They only sent people who could finish in the top 12. So how does that give experience to the up and comers who will be competing in the next summer games?

I've been watching womens gymnastics and womens beach volleyball. yum.

It's too bad that we haven't won more medals by now, but hopefully Perdita Felicien (100 meter hurdles), will bring some joy to Canadians in the next week. I run track and field myself, and think it's the biggest joke in the world that in order to even go to Athens, I would have had to break the National Record by 3 seconds, even though I was only 1.34 seconds off the International qualifying standard. We should do something like Australia did in the 70's and start a huge national sports school.....maybe in 30 years we'll be where they are now........

Gonthro

canada scores another one, a silver this time

Trampoline
Karen Cockburn Women's Individual

that bumps us up to a tie for 16th with 10 other teams

We should do something like Australia did in the 70's and start a huge national sports school Ah but here you are wrong, we indeed have a National Sport School. National Sport school (http://schools.cbe.ab.ca/b830/aboutus.htm#)

Scrap the fuckin gun registry and throw that money into the Olympic fund...it's bullshit that Autrailia with less people throws WAY more money into the games. They put more into their summer olympic program than we do with both summer and winter.
