My mechanic's friend's son is looking to come here from Hong Kong and study at the University or MRC. He called me up asking if I knew anything about the process for out of country students to apply but I honestly have no idea. I told him to call the University Registrar's office but at the same time I figured someone on here may know the process.

Do you come here and then get a student visa or apply first and then apply for a student visa or travel visa or whatever it is? If someone could clue me in it would be great and probably offer a bit of help to him since his english isn't too great and I can see him having difficulty understanding the registrar.

I'm sure there are people that can speak other languages. It would probably be better for him to contact the registrar directly so he doesn't have to deal with second and third hand info.

If his english is poor, he may have a hard time getting accepted. He will need to take the TOEFL exam and I beleive there are minimum scores you need (though I have no idea how hard it is to get those minimum scores).

The process usually works in which you apply to the university, and only after you are accepted do you go ahead and take care of getting your student visa (you require documents from the university saying you are going there to study before you can apply for the visa)

But calling the registrar, or even checking the UofC webpage would be a better way to find out for sure.

Has lots of info:
