A Very Special and Unique Machine
Incredibly rare and limited production model - less than 2,000 N. American models and even less of the European ones.
This car is a European import - has Euro spec 16V twin-cam Cosworth engine (185 HP, not 167 as per US models).
Built for performance - standard equipment includes: transmission oil cooler, tuned exhaust header system (tapered header tubes, low restriction), 10.3" 4-wheel ABS brakes, limited-slip rear axle (3.64:1 ratio), hydra-pneumatic (hydraulic-over-air) suspension, factory body mods (twenty-two pieces), 5-speed Getrag transmission. Has newer Goodyear 205/55VR15 tires.
Not abused and very low mileage (just over 152,000 km (95,000 miles). I have all records. Vehicle is meticulously maintained by Mercedes and never winter driven. Compression check shows 160lb/cyl. Comes with sunroof, Recaro leather seats and MB GPS/CD (installed in Europe). Does not have air, cruise or performance-robbing toys to go wrong.
Don't delay - almost a one of a kind collectible. Functional, fun and affordable! Gets lots of attention, too.
Here's the Mercedes brochure write-up:
The Mercedes-Benz model line has not featured an automobile as overtly performance-minded as the 190E 2.3-16 Sedan in many years. The 190E 2.3-16 might be defined as the 190 Class sedan concept extended close to it's ultimate performance capabilities. It is capable of zero-to-100km/h times of under 9 seconds from a four-cylinder engine derived from the 190 Class powerplant, and generating better than 72 hp per liter of displacement. Its 167 hp is sufficient to push this trim 2.3-litre machine to a test-track maximum of 220 km/h.
(NOTE: this car's specifications are: zero-to-100km/h times of 7.9 seconds, generating better than 80.4 hp per liter. 185 hp rated at top speed of 226 km/h).
Suspension technology pioneered in the 190 Class, and featuring the unique Mercedes-Benz multilink independent rear suspension, is the basis of the car's equally formidable roadholding performance. Formidable, not simply because handling is so agile but because it is at the same time so predictable and controllable.
On the basis of it's performance alone, the 190E 2.3-16 ranks as arguably the world's foremost all-out road machine. But it is also a Mercedes-Benz - so that even at extremes of hard driving, the 190E 2.3-16 never forgets its very civilized heritage. Interior quiet is uncanny, even in the upper ranges of the car's speed. The multilink rear suspension not only holds the road: it holds down the jolts and jarrings so typical of less refined performance machines. The 190E 2.3-16 is a car that can be taken to the outer limits of performance, with behaviour that lets the driver and his/her passengers enjoy the trip.
The 190E 2.3-16 ranks as the ultimate interpretation of the 190 Class performance and handling. It is very quick, very stable, very smooth, and undeniably sporting; yet it is also built to Mercedes-Benz standards of reliability and comfort.
Design work on a new Mercedes-Benz model begins seven to ten years before the first production model rolls off the line. Eight million kilometers of test driving, plus approximately seventy thousand hours of engine testing, are almost routine in this exhaustive process.
Mercedes-Benz: Engineered like no other car in the world.
Performance Records for this model:
Southern Italy, August 13 – 21, 1983
In the early morning of August 13, 1983, three 190E 2.3-16s started a 50,000 km high-speed test run. The record track in Nardo is precisely 12.64026 kilometers long, has a diameter of some four kilometers and slightly banked lanes, thereby permitting driving almost without lateral forces even in the speed range over 240 km/h.
Every two-and-a-half hours, the cars came in for refueling and a change of driver during a 20-second pit stop. During these five-minute tire change breaks, the oil and oil filters were also replaced and the valve clearance was checked.
Three world records, nine international class records
After 201 hours, 39 minutes and 43 seconds, two of the cars had clocked up 50,000 kilometers. The replacement parts carried on board in compliance with the regulations had not been required – the cars had been running perfectly smoothly despite the extreme strain. The third car was laid up for three hours by a broken distributor rotor arm – an item costing just a few cents, which the pit crew were not allowed to replace but had to repair.
World Records set:
after 25,000 km - average speed 247.094 km/h
after 50,000 km - average speed 247.939 km/h

The new Mercedes-Benz 190 E 2.3-16 had already more than fulfilled the hopes pinned on it when it became a crowd-puller at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September and a winner when it came to sales success. These cars are now highly collectible.
