Hey,

You want a Talon huh? :D Good choice! Heh.. I'm surprised I'm the first DSM guy to jump in on thid thread.... anyway.

That Talon you just posted would probably be one I'd stay away from. Too much mileage, plus $3800 probably reflects the shape its in.

To be honest, a fair price for a good AWD turbo 1G would be probably in the $5000 range. I'm gonna be a little biased when I suggest that you should look at a Laser when considering a Talon but thats because I own one ;) but belive me they are the exact same car as well as the Eclipse(States only :( )

The Laser is FWD only and I know you said you wanted an AWD drive so the choicre is yours, but Lasers are generally $1000-1500 cheaper. Just some thoughts to consider...

I don't know if you care but I love bragging about my car....

I bought it for $4350 with full exhaust(minus the downpipe and manifold) and no cat . It also had 138,000km and all the free mods done to it (i.e. - hacked aircan, removed honeycomb, etc). I ran it at race city and got a 15.2@89mph, Now I've got a 16g with crappy motomaster tires that have no traction and ran a 14.9@96mph ( I know, excuses  ). But thats just an example of whats out there and what you can find if you know what to look for.

Anyways I'll post up somew 1g DSM Talon/Laser/Eclipse pics:

Talons are reliable if they're well taken care of. I've got over 135K on my stock motor and it sees all types of driving.
There are plenty of 1G AWDs around
Lasers were available as AWD from 92-94, if you're looking for a car with fewer options a Laser AWD is it.

Thanks. They were homemade 2.5" metal piping. It was the J spec motor (red valve cover) with the big 16G turbo. And yup, that little probe just to the left of the dipstick in the exhaust manifold is an EGT.

Similar setups at our altitude (properly tuned) usually run high 12's to low 13's. I was on my way out to race city with it once, just driving to pick up some race gas and the shifting linkage went on me so I never got the chance to race it.

Hey Paula,

How does the RX-7 compare to the Talon? Which on is faster? There's a guy out here in Airdrie with a white TII who wants to race me but I'm thinking that the turbo rx-7's are pretty quick.

BTW its Joel from the Calg. DSM Club (If the spoiler in the sig pic doesn't tell you who I am, I dont know what will;))

What was the boost set at on your Talon?

I'm planning on getting upper and lower IC pipes and having my sidemount reconditioned as well an intake pipe to help with my airflow. In September I ran a 14.9 with a small 16g, rebuilt head(timing belt  ), a removed aircan w/ K&N, and my 2.5" flex pipe back exhaust on stock boost. With all my planned mods I'm really hoping to get into at least the 13's(I don't have the adavtage of AWD :() With all those mods I'll porbably have to rewire my feul pump or completely replace it.... But all this requires lots of $$$$$$ which I dont have ;)

I never boosted over 15psi, I was too afraid that something would blow up. There were a lot of other mods done to the car as well, the most visable being the hacked aircan and upper and lower IC piping.

LOL..I was horny for a DSM back in 2002 like this guy was. I found a 1993 Tsi AWD w/ 147000 kms for $6300.00.

First year of ownership it cooked 5 alternators, wheel bearings, clutch, rad, brakes..and that was just the beginning.

What a pile of shit that car was. On May 24 weekend 2006 the fucking timing belt tensioner let go in a buddies driveway 3 hours away from home. The valves smashed the pistons when I went to fire it up to go home.

Sold it and still got $1500 for it with a fucked engine, fucked trans, fucked suspension and rust starting on the fenders.

The car was officially fun for about 40,000 kms after buying it. Once it got 190K it was meant to be thrown away, like all DSM's.

But for that fun it probably cost me $15,000.00 total.

Should have just bought a fucking Mustang, it would have been faster and 10X more reliable +10X cheaper to mod.

Like mine that magically started leaking a decent amount of coolant whenever I drive it? I bought it because it was unmolested (BONE STOCK) and "supposedly" had the timing belt just done.

Sigh, I can't wait to be rid of this car. Its great and all, but compared to a Subaru? No f'in way!

I had a 91 model in 1999, I drove it for 20,000 kms before I sold it .... admittedly I drove the car fairly hard.

list of "minor bugs"

- cv boots went
- clutch (which was changed 20,000kms prior) went
- unexplained coolant loss
- massive turbo oil leak (external)
- burnt valve (due to bad machining job after previous owners timing belt broke)
- 2nd gear tranny crunch when cold

....the guy who bought it from me ended up cooking the turbo by shutting the car off after a high speed drive. The turbo was glowing red hot when he called me and asked what to do.

I've owned 5 Talons, a Laser, a VR-4, a 4G63t swapped Colt and an Eclipse. All turbo 4G63's most AWD. I still love these cars, everytime I see a nice clean 1G Talon I want to buy another one. The problem is too many young kids who don't know how to take care of a car buy them, they beat the shit out of them, then whine about how unreliable they are.

Blah blah blah

I faithfully fixed mine and every time I did, it would be OK for 2-weeks (you could set your watch off it) before something else fucked up.

I also like how the constant breaking down gets swept under the rug as "maintenance". NO CAR should fry alternators at the rate of oil changes, have noisy valves lash adjusters, transmission syncros that start grinding at 170K, brake calipers that freeze up if the car sits for 3 months etc etc etc.

I had done my timing belt, B-shaft belt, water pump and tensioners about 4 months before the tensioner let go and killed mine.

That was the final straw.

The fact is, the DSM's were built to be affordable sports cars and for the low price they sold them for, you were not getting quality hardware.

Mitsubishi tried it again but built them with better parts. That car is called the (much more expensive) EVO.

I wasn't trying to lump everyone who had problems into the whiny kid category, I'm sure some people just had bad examples. Just from my experience the DSM's could really take a lot and the times I did have major issues could be directly linked back to human error.

My bad..no offense.

I knew mine had been blown up by the previous owner and I bought it freshly rebuilt (He ran 20+ psi without doing anything supporting). Everything else was good. A buddy of mine had a 92.5 6-bolt/4-bolt car and his was no better. He had major cv shaft issues/trans/water pump/cooling/brakes etc. The cars were only designed to last 180,000 kms.

I loved my old Talon. I had a 94 Talon ES that threw a cam angle sensor and I figured it would be cheaper to drop in a 4G63-Turbo out of a JDM VR4 then buying a new cam angle sensor (couldn't find one at a junkyard) anyways that started my obsession with the car.

Can't have a RX-7 thread without having a few posters make fun of them for apex seal failures. That's what happens when you build engines that don't last. Suck it up and buy a Honda if you don't like it.

I'm sorry, first off, how did this thread become a Subaru vs Evo thread (Granted I made the evo comment, but only in response to the unruley Subaru comment since hitempguy was comparing same year subaru's to same year talons...) - 2nd how did it then become a rx-7 vs civic thread?

I'd say the Evo is the better car, but I just like Subaru's more. I don't have many experience with either so I'm not being biased, but there's not much about the Mitsubishi that makes me want one.

:werd: I'm not getting worked up. I like EVOs and I think they are amazing cars. I also think the EvoX is a better car than the new STIs, but almost every time subaru is mentioned, I see HeavyD slamming it. I'm not debating which car is better, as they both have their own merits. Every person has the right to their own opinions, but I'm just getting bored of hearing heavyD state it at what seems like, absolutely every single time Subaru is brought up.

Quit being such pussies. I made one (1) Subaru comment in this thread, that's it and it was in response to a poor comparison of a near 20 year old car to newer Subarus. I have all day to debate if you want but this thread is about DSM's.

Did you read what I even wrote? I wasn't trying to debate. Just commenting on how you have to include your manditory subaru bashing everytime subaru is mentioned in ANY thread. Not talking about just this one in specific. The guy was also talking about a 93 subaru so the comparison wouldn't be that far off.
