"Three Rallies In Three Days"

The smooth and the rough
After the rough mountain tracks of Argentina, and the fast gravel sweeps of Finland, it’s back to asphalt after a six-month break from sealed surfaces, and the unique event that is the OMV ADAC Rallye Deutschland. The rally is held in the heart of the wine-producing Mosel region, near to the historic city of Trier. It is run on a mix of narrow, winding asphalt vineyard roads and rough tank tracks in the Baumholder military, which have proved to be a real test thanks to the huge kerbstones which border them and threaten to rip a corner off the car if anything goes wrong.

Student digs
Trier may be Gernany’s oldest city, but it has a young and lively population thanks to the famous university. Most of the town looks like something you’d expect to find on the lid of a Swiss chocolate box. There are lots of quaint half-timbered Hansel and Gretel-style houses, often painted in bright colours. There’s loads of atmosphere, but, perhaps more importantly, there’s lots of beer. Almost every other building appears to be a bar, serving steins of the superb local brews. It’s not just beer that’s supped by the locals, though, as the local Mosel wines are also superb.

So Xsara, so good
The Rally Deutschland has been a mainstay of German rallying since its inception in 1982. Over the years, it has moved home, with Rally HQs in Frankfurt am Main, St Wendel, Koblenz and Adenau – the entrance of the infamous 13km Nordschleife circuit – but moved to Trier in 2000. Since its official debut as a round of the WRC in 2002, Rally Deutschland has been dominated by Sebastien Loeb and the Citroen Xsara – Phillipe Bugalski even set up a hat-trick of wins for the French marque in 2001, when the team used it as part of its pre-WRC development programme.

Variety is the spice of life
Rallye Deutschland may be an asphalt event, but it has one of the widest varieties of sealed surfaces on the calendar. As such it’s a tricky event that demands the very best from drivers. The opening leg is held on narrow vineyard access roads that feature a mix of straights and hairpins that make handbrake skills essential. Saturday’s leg is held on the rougher tank tracks of the Baumholder military ranges, while the final day features smooth, fast bitumen-coated roads similar to those used on the Rally Catalunya in southern Spain. All-in-all, a challenging mix.

- so it looks like Loeb has the championship all but wrapped up with a commanding lead in the points race, but there are still many (6) rallies left, and anything can happen.
