Does anyone know what process I need to go through to burn a DIVX movie I have onto DVD (so that it can be played in a normal standalone DVD player?)

just use nero, it'll automatically encode it for you.

I'm not an expert, but I would think that you could encode it into MPEG-2 and then burn it.

Or you could buy a DVD player that plays divx like the LITEON LVD-2002.

I use NeroVision Express 2 to create my own dvd with divx videos I have.

How about subtitles (.srt files)? How would that work?

like creating an option for turning subtitles on/off?
its a pain in the arse that Ive never bothered to learn how to do it, because it takes alot of work.

a trick that I do is I encode the subtitle in the movie using VirtualDub, then burn it with nero.

Don't need option to turn on/off. Just want to make sure I have subtitles if I burn the movie. I'll check for virtualdub. Thanks.

make sure you have the plugins for enconding subtitles on the movie though.
you can either use subtitler, textsub, vobsub

and how to access it is Video -> Filters... (if you cant access this, select Full Processing Mode below first) -> Add -> choose either subtitler, textsub, vobsub.
then encode the video with any codec you want (takes 30-50min depending on CPU)

I'll host the plugins for you if you cant find them
