That's right folks, beyond.ca and Race City are hosting a 4 night drift session! So you think you're the next drift king? Come out and see what it's like to drift your car in a safe and controlled environment.

We got 4 evenings in September in the oval for drift practice, school, and events. Each night will be priced at $40/night, with a max of 20 cars a night to ensure everyone gets tons of track time. Dates will be Sept 9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th. 5pm until 9pm. It'll be a first come first serve basis, and if you register for day 1 and 2, you'll have dibs for the spots on day 3 and 4.

Since none of us are really qualified to teach, we'll be setting up stations so you can try it and get a feel for the basics. Some of us have some drifting experience, and we can help you out with suggestions and techniques. There will be 4-6 of us "instructors" out there at each night.

Day 1 - Drift basics. 2 stations. First station is a slalom to get basic feel for weight transfer on the back straight. Start with cones close together (1st gear) then end with cones farther apart (2nd gear). Second station will start off with a single circle to get used to holding a drift, then end the night with 2 circles to practice transitioning from one drift to another. Maybe have a 3rd station for practicing rotating around a single pylon.

Day 2 - Drift advanced. 2 stations. Slalom again for station 1, with final exit into midfield. Again, varying distances between cones to get increasing radius entry and decreasing radius entry. Second station will have 2 circles, one large, one small. Transition into increasing radius drift, as well as decreasing radius drift.

Day 3 - Drift Course simple. Something like what we had at SCC.

Day 4 - Complex drift course.

Requirements. RWD or AWD car, LSD recommended but not requred. We'll have some stations setup that work well for cars without LSD. Spare tires are HIGHLY RECOMMENDED in case you get a flat.

You must pre-pay for these events. If you're interested, post here or send me an email at [email protected] or you can PM me for prepayment info. I can meet up to collect money whenever. If you can make it to the 403honda meet on Wednesday nights at Chinook, I'll be there too.

I'll also have paypal setup shortly.

If you think you can drift in your car, you're more than welcome to try. As for spectator access, I dunno yet... I'll have to check with Race City.

does the car have to be registered and insured for a race track?

rage2
08-25-2004, 10:31 AM
You can tow a race car there if you want. Doesn't have to be street legal.

You can bring any car as long as it's mechanically sound. There will be a small tech area to ensure cars are safe for the events.

Tech will be easy to pass.
Were not going to get all tech about everything, if your car is in good running condition...or close, it will pass. The tech will be similar to whats done at Secret Street on fridays...probably not that anal though.

Bring a helmet if you have one...BRING EXTRAS IF YOU HAVE THEM

BTW...I will have the most beater/rusted/noisy/$300 car there (try to do worse ;) ), if it can pass, anything can pass :D

I drifted in my SLK 32. It's an automatic with no LSD. It's about LEARNING how to drift, everyone will be treated the same way.

Hope everyones having luck getting their cars ready, and hopefully everyone can show up between 430 and 530. We've got a few things planned, but for the most part it's going to be quite casual. We'll work on corner entry with some drills from Drift Bible, as well as some mid-corner and exit work with a small skidpad and slalomn before breaking out into a small course for some real fun.

Looking forward to it. I believe spectators will be ok, but the pit area will be reserved for entrants only, and there will be nobody but marshals on course.

I meant it failed the insurance inspection. Tech may or may not have passed it - dunno how anal they are about it. But with no shocks, kind of dumb for me to try drifting. :D

Khyron

Cueman
09-10-2004, 03:11 PM
Not that anal on tech. As long as your car is safe... i.e., wheels aren't going to fall off, the steering wheel is going to do it's job, and it can stop, you should be good. Glass and lights are not a major concern.

How many 86's were there?
Believe we had...
7 86's

1 STi
2 S13's
1 S12

Definitely come, you will not be alone in that.

We decided there won't be any formal instruction, but EVERYBODY is really friendly and open if you have questions, or want to ride along.

This Thursday, we'll be starting around 5:30, you don't need to prepay, but you do need to PM me by wednesday and tell me if you'll be there. There will be a cut at 20 cars. Again, cost will be $40.

Format will be about the same as last week, but we're going to try and come up with some better courses.

Nice work on the last event! Your drifts onto the backside of the oval were pretty crazy. I tried going down the backside (the oval portion of the track) doing some crazy drifts, but I ended up in the grass (I was the guy in the red hatch with swinging magnaflow). It looked like you almost hit the wall on one of your spins.

THIS WAS GREAT FUN FOR ALL! I can't wait until I can do it again.

Any vids up yet?? I want to see my pathetic attempts to drift.
