Jeep Cherokee's

I am looking for a 4x4 currently. I am considering a cherokee. Is there anything that i should watch out for or common problems. I was hoping for a 5spd and 2dr. Any info on these would be great.

The Auto is better IMO.

What's the reason for the 5sp? The Auto is pretty well bulletproof.

Stick with a 4.0l.

Don't even consider one with the 2.8 V6.

Depending on your budget try for a 94 or up and you can have one that has A/C that you can actually recharge with the R-134a.

i have a 2.8 and a 4.0 and yeah go with the 4.0... depending on what you intend to do with it ie. lift, wheels suspension,...you will find that the gas mileage gets even worse. and as phuqu said the auto is really good for a stock tranny. i love my jeeps and i would highly recommend them to anyone.

go automatic(tuff tranny) the ax-15 5spd is an insult what a piece!

try to get a 4.0l HO engine better cooling system
the regular 4.0l cooling system has a funny problem prone system as well the throttle body set up on a ho engine is better

problem area's:
rear main seal
the diffs are fairly wimpy if u want to use anything larger then 33" but there are a lot of parts available.
5 spd tranny
tps sensor
cps sensor
electrical older non ho 4.0l
i've heard that the 4.0 has issuse with throwing rods but it never happened to me .
('89 cherokee 297.00km's ran great till i sold it)
(1994 yj ,135,000km's ran good till i sold it)

the non ho 4.0l is a torque engine the ho one has more power higher up in the rpms.

some cherokee's came with an offroad package ie.
skid plates and rear gas tank skid plate
tow package ie.
different gearing and sometimes a d44 rear end
and a trailer hitch.

Expect 17-22mpg for a 4.0 auto.

the 98-00 auto's had a majour flaw in the 2 gear pulman valve , they typicaly went at 110,000km's, expect about a 5-$600 bill

a common problem is the shifter, somtimes it wont lock into the park postion even though it says its in it. That is a recall and any jeep dealership should fix it for free!:thumbsup:

Could a 98 with 160km still have this problem?

Be mindful of the hindges on the front doors,

My Fiance works at a dodge dealer, and she was told its about $160 to get the hindges re-welded

Are the 5spd's still garbage in the newer ones(like 98). I am going to look at one tomorrow, its a 98 so well see how it goes. How would a 98 be on the higway? I am lookng for something that i can drive for a couple years and not worry too much about things breaking constantly. I can deal with maintenance but don't want it in the shop all the time. How would it be towing a boat(i think it weighs about 3000lbs)? It would be a rare occasion but it still needs to do it, would auto or manual be best suited for this. I would also be getting the 4L for sure. I need something that i can drive without too many problems for probably the next 4 years. Is a jeep even a good choice for this or should i look for something else.

I know its a lot of questions but i really want to be sure what i am getting is going to be best for my situation.

there is no such thing as a pullman valve

cherokee's are great vehicles nothing really wrong with them at all except the manual tranny (ax15) i think they minght have switch in 2000 to the nv2300 or something manual tranny(good tranny)
the 4.0l has enuff to pull a boat on a daily basis if u wanted to but i would not pull a boat bigger then 20ft for a long distace .
i would also beef up the rear leaf springs and get a trailer brake installed.
i would say that the 98's are good on the highway, my '89 was nice .
biggest things to look for are the regular maintinance records , make sure that certain things were done at the proper intervals and the documentation would prove it .
take it for a drive see how it handles take it in a parking lot and see if the 4x4 ingages (only drive in a strait line) drive in 2wd and do some really slow but really tight figure eights .
if ur buying it from some young kid most likely its seen the bush
