View Full Version : Volvo V40 trying to race a 2002 911 C2

During the summer, I was driving down Macleod Tr minding my own business until this Volvo V40 (which is a station wagon with 170hp) starts reving his engine and staring me down trying to race me in my porsche. I was like whatever, but he did this all the way down from Chinook Centre till Southcentre. I was so annoyed. I am not racing a V40, what do I have to prove. They were teenagers driving their parents car too. I am not getting a racing or speeding tix trying to prove something I don't need to prove. I don't like to race anyone, I like to drive fast but at my own conditions. If you want to race go to race city or race someone who has a comparable car to you!

Volvo s60t5 is sweet, s40 isn't comparable.

Look at the porsche website but I think it is 98,000 base and there are alot of options. Usually the cheapest 911 C2 comes in at 107,000.

I am young and enjoy expensive cars. Personally there is nothing like driving a porsche (except maybe a ferrari). In calgary people are just amazed by a porsche. I don't think you get the same attention if you drive an M3 or M5 and although some people will say they are better cars than the 911, but would you choose driving an M3 or M5 over a 911? Maybe 40 year olds will pick the M5 but a 911 is a legend.

Haha, I usually let them get ahead while taking it easy until about 5000rpm. After that, just crank the throttle and it's like watching the Enterprise jumping into warp speed. :D

I just know I'm going to get flamed for this, but I'd take a new Viper SRT-10 over a 911.

Viper is a great car for the money. It is pure american muscle. Since I am Chinese, american muscle does not appeal to me. I like german refinement in my cars.

Except I'm not chinese...

I'd probably pick m5 over 911 c2, but then again it was 10g more when I last checked, In calgary the 911 will get noticed more though, 911 would get way more looks.

I like the M5 and have consider buying the new version of the M5 when it comes out but I can't tear myself away from porsche right now. In addition I would get a terrible trade in for my porsche from the bmw dealership.

I don't know about pure American Muscle. I guess you could consider it that. I just like it because it offers raw performance for a good price.

I think that the C2 is 10G's more than the M5, or is that what you were saying?

Porsche has amazing resale value. Find the right deal and you will barely lose any money. I bought a used 99 911 C2 (1600km) in December 99 and then sold it in april 2002 (with 30 000 km) on it and lost 5 thousand on it. Now that is pretty amazing.

there's a 2000 M5 going for 83k. I would personally pick a 911 over a M5, its so much more of a head tuner, ( if ppl dont know about cars look 3, 5 series look alike to them).

But i would also pick the new 03' viper over the 911 :D

The MRSP on a M5 is 105 500 and it has no options except winter tires and 16 way power sits that cost 1225. So maybe you get 117 with those two options and with gst. I said cheap 911 go for 107 000 (without gst) but actually most have a lot of options and will price between 110 000 and 120 000. Some can top 130 000. So basically they are the same price. Although I know BMW are assholes and you will pay full retail if you want an M5 while porsche you will get a generous discount. BMW is notorious for giving bad trade in values I hear, so is porsche most likely. But I got a great trade in value because I traded in a car they wanted a 99 911 C2 (They actually sold it 3 days later).

hehe Southcenter Porsche isn't the nicest on trade ins either. My friend bought a used 2000 996 C4 from them, but had to sell it a month later. They wanted to gouge him for ~$20K for a month's worth of driving!

Car companies have to make money. Did he want to buy another car from them or just ask for cash? I am pretty sure if he wanted to trade it in he probably lose 10 grand. Did he sell it by himself? If he did how was that experience? I am thinking about selling my porsche in a couple years privately. But I am afraid of pranks and idiots just wanting to drive my car with no chance of buying it.

In addition cars are toys, when you buy an expensive car expect to lose alot of money.

Since when is ANY dealership good at giving trade in values? They are not charities...

If you are a dealership like porsche and benz and have many repeat buyers, of course they aren't going to give great trade in values but usually they are going to give a fair/good trade in value to you especially if your trade in car is one of their cars. eg buy a benz, trade in a benz. buy a porsche trade in a porsche. But if you trade in a different kind of car to them, you probably will get a bad trade in value.

$20K depreciation in 1 month is gouging, simple as that. He's a repeat customer who lost his job, he would've been OK with a $10K hit. He sold the car privately for $17K more than what southcenter offered. They knew he needed money quick, that's my guess as to why they lowballed him so badly. Remember, this is not a NEW car. If he bought the car NEW, then the $20K is justifyable.

I don't like Hyatt too much, but they've been really good to me with trade-in. Hyatt took our SLK 230 for $2K less than what we would've got for it privately. We didn't buy another car from them either, just got $ back. The $2K was well worth the wait/hassles of selling privately.

The wait for a serious buyer was the problem, as he needed money quick. He never let anyone drive the car. People buying $90K cars know what they're looking for already, no need for test drives. It's not rude to not let prospective buyers drive your car IMO.

Totally agree. If his car was a new car, the $20K depreciation would be acceptable. Unfortunately, this incident dealt with a used car.

Yeah, that does seem like a bit much, Is that what they offered him and he gave up right away, or did he actually try to bargain? Cause a dealership hoping to make 20 K off that car is pretty absurd...

Chu
11-14-2002, 01:09 PM
Rage: What his car Burgundy? Because when I bought my car this spring, this was a used C4 in the dealership that was sold. If you are looking to buy a a used porsche look in the winter months at the bmw, benz dealership you might find a great deal, just like me.

I believe there was about a week's worth of discussions before he went and sold it privately.

Chu
11-14-2002, 01:30 PM
Did he try to sell it to them this summer? Because the dealership was loaded with used C4's and probably did not want to take it back. When I traded in my C2, they had no used C2's in and my car was desirable to them. The irony in porsche is that a used C2 is easier to sell then a used C4, and usually the used C2 and C4 will sell at a same price, plus or minus a few grand.

Wow that is a rare rare car. The wierd thing is that southcentre over the last couple of years seems to always have in stock a C4 cab. I don't know who buys those cars too. Brand new the stick price is around 135 000 for that car. Personally I don't like the 911 cabs that is why I didn't buy one although alot of people tried to pressure me into buying one. The main reason is that the boxster looks better than a 911 cab.
