you need to use a firewire card.

I use firewire card, Ulead Video Studio 5 and Ulead Media Studio 6.5.

hey rage, just a question, does your graphics card make a difference when you're capturing video? like would it make a difference if i had a 64MB vid card vs a 128MB vid card?

No it doesn't make a difference. The CPU and HDD speed does tho, if both aren't fast enough, you'll get dropped frames.

So using the Ulead software is how you get the better quality captures? I'm using Window's Movie maker in XP and I can only get 640 x 480 resolution over firewire.

Actually, firewire brings the DV video over at 720x480. Ulead just has a "capture" that takes the data stream from the DV camcorder and save it to the hard drive. I use Ulead to convert all my clips to MPEG2 before I work with 'em... save space and faster.

I prefer Ulead Video Studio 5 over version 6, since it uses the LSX mpeg2 engine, which yields better quality but at a slower speed.

This is from memory, so I may be wrong... :D

After you put your clip together, go to finish. Click on the create new clip icon, and select MPEG Custom. From there choose your settings, your bitrate, etc. and create the MPEG1 or MPEG2 file.

In Video Studio 6, you can do the same thing, but the quality of the MPEG2 compressor is terrible. From DV sourced inputs, you can see interlacing really bad, especially with high motion thin objects (ie kenny's stock wheels on a dyno... the thin spokes looks like it's heavily flickering). The LSX codecs were much better at "blending", eliminating the flickering completely.
